Beatdown: Angels 15, Devil Rays 6

First, I suppose the bad news, and it's liable to linger for a while. Bartolo Colón got pulled in the first inning with elbow pain, and the suspicion that this is a cascade injury from his banged-up shoulder is consequently pretty strong. It's unlikely we'll know too much about this until later in the day or maybe the week, but that's almost enough for me to believe he could be shut down for a while, and the obvious step of Joe Saunders called up to replace him.

The second bit of bad news was Kevin Gregg going down with some kind of leg injury. Gregg's not the best pitcher in the bullpen, but his absence implies an abcess where J.C. Romero starts getting outings against righties, hardly the best circumstance. Hurry back healthy, Kevin.

Now all that said, the obvious fun was with the game's absurd offensive explosion in the second inning, a ten-run frame in which the Angels put the game away, though given the state of the bullpen, it was hardly a given that they'd end the day with a W. They did it against starter Casey Fossum, and relievers Edwin Jackson and Chad Harville, each of whom combined for one out. Jackson I feel sad for; it's clear he still has command issues, and isn't getting the job done at the major league level. If the trade that sent him to Tampa Bay looked bad from a youth-and-potential standpoint, that potential has yet to be realized with Edwin. I continue to cheer for his eventual recovery to become a steady major league pitcher.

Offensively, Juan Rivera starred for four RBIs, though Maicer Izturis and Robb Quinlan each had three; in Q's case, it should be noted he did this against right-handed pitching, his nemesis so far. Howie Kendrick went 2-5 with a walk and stranded five, making him the biggest frustration of the game in that regard, and yet how can you complain when one of those two was a home run?

With the win, the Angels, if temporarily, take sole posession of the AL West lead, contingent on the outcome of today's Boston @ Oakland game, currently scoreless after half a frame. Off, then, to Boston, with a travel day on Thursday. It'll be their last one until August 21, three straight weeks of non-stop play and travel. Good luck, fellas.

Comments:
Seriously, dealing Kennedy in the next week would provide a huge offensive upgrade for the team simply by having Kendrick play every day. Time to pull the trigger, Billy S.
