News
- Brandon Wood's 19th home run in Friday's game broke an Arkansas franchise record for homers by a shortstop.
- Tom Kayser, Texas League President, decided to have a little fun with Aaron Peel,
Brandon Wood, and the Travs. Peel was ejected from a June 27 game for using an illegal bat. (No mention of this occurred in the MILB.com game log or the game wrap.)
Kayser sent a letter to the Travs explaining that Peel's mistake was clearly an oversight, with no attempt to deceive, and that he would receive no additional penalty.
"Having a hit taken away and being removed from the game is penalty enough," Kayser wrote. "Not to mention the embarrassment of taking such an obviously illegal bat to the plate."
But Kayser couldn't resist skewering the Travs, especially on-deck batter Brandon Wood.
"I am imposing a $100 fine on the Arkansas team and a $100 fine on the ondeck hitter, Mr. Wood, for the complete lack of awareness of the use of such an obviously illegal bat," Kayser wrote. "How those closest to the action could be so grossly negligent is beyond my understanding."
While Wood, who got a $1.3 million signing bonus from the Los Angeles Angels in 2003, probably could afford the fine, it was all a joke.
"It was A, for fun, but it was also, B, 'Good grief, how could they let that occur?'" Kayser said. "It was having some fun with a little bit of a message."
- The U.S. beat the World 8-5
in today's Futures Game. Nick Adenhart did not pitch for the
U.S. team. Howie Kendrick was 0-2 with a walk, reached on an
error, and scored a pair of runs. Juel Guzman played third base
and was 0-2 with two strikeouts.
Howie Kendrick gave some advice to his teammates:
[Stephen] Drew and Kendrick weren't as impressed with [Davis] Romero as they had been with [starter Humberto] Sanchez, and the U.S. tagged Romero for five hits and five runs. The both told teammates to wait out his tailing fastball and to sit on his offspeed stuff. The two have gotten to know each other the last two years in the minor leagues as adversaries and have developed a friendship based on respect of their mutual hitting ability.
The game was the highest-scoring Futures Game ever.Kendrick had more fun talking about his major league debut this season. Not only did he have to deal with facing big league pitching for the first time, but he also had to learn to play the corner infield spots for the first time. Kendrick said he had never played first base before his trip to the majors.
- The Angels officially announced the signing of Korean prep pitcher Young-il Jung for a $1M signing bonus.
Scores
Smith, C: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Eylward: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Mathis, J: 2-4
Pavkovich: 3-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Aspito: 2-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Moseley: 5.2 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 9 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 3.99 ERA
Bootcheck: (W, 3-2) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 7.33 ERA
Moseley hasn't had a quality start in his last three tries, despite getting the win in his June 29 outing. Curtis Pride won the game in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI double, but Reggie Willits' 3-4 outing and homers by Jason Aspito and Adam Pavkovitch kept the game close. It marked the second straight come-from-behind victory by the Bees, and a home sweep of the River Cats.
The Bees take a break for the AAA All-Star game, and start the second half with a four-game road series at Sacramento on July 13.
Peel, A: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Wood: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
Brown: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Evans: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Wilson: 1-1, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Green: (W, 4-1), 6.2 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 7 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.57 ERA
A teeth-clenching game for Nick Green, who breaks a string of three consecutive quality starts, but won anyway. Two-run homers from Bobby Wilson and new acquisition Terry Evans fueled the Travs' victory; the one and two hitters, Nathan Haynes and Aaron Peel, were a combined 4-9 with three RBIs. Evans' homer was his second in a Travs' uniform.
With the win, the Travs take the oddball one-game series from Wichita, and if you consider the four-game series at Arkansas before, they take the five-game series. Tomorrow, the Travs return to Ray Winder to meet San Antonio for four games. The Travs are now 8-9 in the second half and in second place in the Texas League North Division.
Rodriguez, S: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB
Collins: 1-5, 2 RBI
Johnson: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Lopez: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Fuller: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Gelinas: (W, 1-3), 8.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 10 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 5.76 ERA
Everybody was kung fu fighting... man, this game sure felt like a barfight. Two errors by Rancho ended up as two unearned runs as Michel Simard very nearly let this one slip away; both sides posted three-run ninth innings. Cody Fuller was a single short of the cycle; Karl Gelinas went eight innings. Former Dirtbag Evan Longoria had a solo homer in the Oaks loss.
Rancho won the one-game series, and salvaged a win from the three game set against Visalia. They move on to play Inland Empire for three starting Monday.
Wipke: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Davies: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Morris: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Hill: 4.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 7 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 3.60 ERA
Howell: (L, 1-6) (in relief), 2.2 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 5.01 ERA
The Kernels trailed from the second inning on, as offense dominated in this game. Starter Andrew Hill didn't make it into the fifth.
LaRoche: 0-5, 1 K
Loney: 2-4
Young, D: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Robles: 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Bellorin, E: 2-4, 2 K
Hanrahan: 0-1, 1 K
Valdez: 1-1, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Hanrahan: 6.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 8 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.25 ERA
Neither of Luis E. Gonzalez nor Justin Reid could stop the Sidewinders' attack in the ninth or make an out, and so Joel Hanrahan's quality start, and multi-hit nights from Delwyn Young, James Loney, and Edwin Bellorin, all went for naught.
As with the Bees, the 51's have Monday through Wednesday off for the AAA All-Star break, returning to action on July 13 against the Sidewinders.
Dewitt: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Bruce: 2-5, 2 K
Locke: 1-3, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Dunlap: 3-4, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB
Paul, X: 2-4, 1 RBI
Hoffmann: 2-4, 1 RBI
Megrew: 3.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 1.12 ERA
Leach: (W, 1-1) (in relief), 2.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 4.09 ERA
An ugly outing for Mike Megrew, but the Dodgers won anyway. Cory Dunlap hit a grand slam off Daytona starter Mark Holliman.
De Jesus: 2-4
Denker, T: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Sutherland: 2-4
May: 0-4, 4 K
Harper: 2-3, 1 BB
Alvarez: 5.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 5.49 ERA
Gomez de Segura: (W, 3-3) (in relief), 2.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 3 BB, 5.45 ERA
Troncoso: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.80 ERA
Travis Denker drove in the winning run on an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Ivan De Jesus. With the win, the Catfish take the three-game series, which concludes tomorrow.
