Pickoff Moves

Today's Birthdays

Kent Anderson CAL b. 1963, played 1989-1990. Along with Brendan Donnelly, a strike replacement player.

D.J. Houlton LAN b. 1979, played 2005. Presently toiling at Las Vegas, with ho-hum results.

Urbano Lugo CAL b. 1962, played 1985-1988

Ken McBride LAA,CAL b. 1935, played 1961-1965, All-Star: 1961-1963. Bill Rigney wanted to take his ace out of the game, but McBride insisted on staying in, despite a long rain delay. He convinced Rigney, but then once he got on the mound, "I heard something go pop," McBride reported. He was never the same, and the man who was once the ace of the Angels staff faded from view. Factoid: he twice led the league in hit batters.

Enter Saundman: Angels 7, Yankees 3

Joe Saunders finally took some cough syrup with codeine to put him to sleep on the eve of his Yankee Stadium debut, leading to the question of how long it'll be before the Senate starts going after team doctors for having the temerity to dispense dangerous, addictive opiates on such flimsy excuses. Regardless, the kid went 4-0 on a start that pushed Angels rookie starters' collective record to 12-0, thanks to a homer from Garret Anderson and an unlikely one off the bat of Maicer Izturis. It also didn't hurt that Chone Figgins made a fine catch of a sinking liner off the bat of A-Rod, and Saunders proceeded to pick up a double play off Jason Giambi. In all, a night of mostly very good play by the Angels, save for one error by Maicer that allowed Craig Wilson to reach on the seventh, an act that ultimately set up Saunders' exit.

Hendrickson Did What? Dodgers 3, Giants 2

I saw it with my own eyes, and I still don't believe that Mark Hendrickson held the slumping Giants down to two runs. I'll say this for him, his control last night was the best I've seen thus far in a Dodgers uniform. It's too bad he didn't get the win. But take nothing away from Giants starter Noah Lowry; he pitched a solid six and two thirds, leaving it for Brian Wilson to give up the game-winning sac fly off Julio Lugo's bat.

The Dodgers are, crazily, a game and a half on top of the eminently winnable NL West, and are 13-1, the mirror image of their 1-13 stretch to open the second half. Baseball is a funny game.

Roster Notes

"Dodgers On Demand" Channel May Violate MLB Rules

MLB is reviewing the "Dodgers on Demand" channel:
MLB apparently is concerned the channel might violate baseball's Interactive Media Rights Agreement, which was created when MLB Advanced Media, which oversees mlb.com, was formed in 2000. But there is a specific clause in that agreement stating that "the following should not be considered interactive media for purposes of this agreement: one-way transmission of radio and television via any medium other than the Internet."

"Dodgers on Demand" doesn't involve the Internet. For now, it doesn't offer broadcasts of recent games. And the archived game broadcasts it does offer aren't offered in their entirety because they have been edited.

I haven't looked at it yet, but I have confirmed that it's available on our local Time Warner cable system.

Comments:
Two things:
1) Brian Wilson came in to give up the sac fly.

2) Dodgers on Demand is not compelling viewing.
