News
- Jered Weaver will be the featured speaker at the 2007 season Leadoff Dinner for Dirtbag baseball on January 25, 2007. The dinner will be held at the Grand, 4101 East Willow, in Long Beach.
- Something I missed earlier: Dustin Moseley's winning effort on Monday clinched the division for the Bees (also via MILB.com). The PCL playoffs begin on September 6 at Tucson, to play one of their season-long nemeses, the Diamondbacks' affiliate Sidewinders.
- Ray Winder Field is down to its last three games. Travelerocity has a farewell post up for the old park; the fans are apathetic after the Angels put a simply awful team on the field for the park's final season. I plan on doing a much more extensive post on this later.
- Scott McClain, whom we saw in 2004 Spring Training and again in 2006, has been named PCL MVP, with the Sacramento River Cats. His major league career consists of 34 at bats between the Devil Rays and Cubs. McClain is 34.
- Here's an article clarifying the postseason situation for the AZL Angels. The Angels and Padres were tied at the end of the half; yesterday's 1-0 victory broke the tie, and now (despite my earlier comments, and the unreliable information posted on the league info page, the two sides will play a best-of-three series to determine the league champion. But — see below: maybe this is wrong, too...
- The AZL All-Star roster was announced, and AZL Angels skipper Ever Magallanes was named its manager; Vladimir Veras, who led the league with eight wins and a 1.35 ERA was named its starting pitcher. Matt Sweeney was named as third baseman.
- Team Venezuela handed the US its first loss in Olympic qualifiers. Brandon Wood is 1-21 thus far.
- Here's an Alan Schwarz interview with Jered Weaver. Excerpt:
