Ervin Santana Wants To Leave Now: Red Sox 7, Angels 2

I'm getting to my "had enough" point with Santana, who just can't seem to find a way to pitch decently in away parks no matter what the Angels do. I can't recall the last time — if ever — where I've given up on a game before the Angels had made even one out, but the first three Red Sox to come to bat hit the ball hard, and it was downhill from there. I know this is extreme (and those inclined to accuse me of making snap judgments will no doubt do so again), but maybe it's time to take him out of the rotation until he can figure out how to pitch in away games.

The other problem seems to be Vlad's first inning plunk on the wrist by Red Sox starter Josh Beckett. (X-rays came back negative, thank God, but I can only assume he'll miss 2-5 games, an awful lot considering he leads the team in RBIs.) Quite frankly I couldn't even turn on the radio without thinking how much I wanted Beckett to take a line drive to the noggin after that, or for Santana to plunk Ortiz in retaliation — except that he couldn't, thanks to baseball's wonderful rules on hit-by-pitch that actually encourage a free-pass first hit.

Of course, Santana did manage to quiet down as the innings progressed; had he been ejected after a hypothetical inside pitch at Big Papi, it's likely Dustin Moseley would have gotten the call in relief. Moseley pitched two scoreless innings, quite an accomplishment for that lineup. But Scot Shields really caught my attention by striking out the side in the eighth, a nice rebound from his last bad outing. K-Rod also pitched an excellent ninth.

Howie Kendrick contributed, though if it weren't for his a solo homer in the top of the ninth, he might be a candidate for the doghouse. There are times when he still seems awfully raw, like many of his 0-fer days, or today. He got a single in the top of the sixth and got thrown out at second trying to stretch it out into a double; he seems to have trouble overestimating where his legs can take him. Also, he committed a three-base error in the first that allowed Manny Ramirez to score, extending the inning by one and possibly two outs. Nevertheless, his 2-4 day brought his average — his most important stat, all things considered — up to .340. The season's early yet. It'll move around some.

In addition to swapping Santana out of the rotation, I'm all for calling up Evans and sending down Quinlan, then using Evans in place of Hillenbrand at DH and as 4th outfielder.

I dunno. I'm not sure the Angels' Jesus-powered outfielder is a good candidate to haul up to the Show for an extended trial. The Angels have been fooled before by the PCL's high-altitude parks...

Why not just schedule the rotation so that Santana only pitches games at home? Basically, have him available for a couple innings in relief if they are on a long road trip, and have Bootcheck or someone spot start (hell, once they get Colon and The Weave back, just make it a 6-man rotation). That should solve his inconsistency problems.

Nice call out, Rob. ;) The takes on Shields and Kendrick were rash, but actually, I think your take on Bad Magic is fairly reasonable. There's more than enough data on this one: Ervin can't pitch on the road.

Whether it's time to remove him from the rotation or not, I can't say yet. He looks plenty sharp at home, so it's a tough call. Obnoxious mystery...it overstays its welcome like a fourth season of Lost.

Send down Q on the basis of 4 games and 12 ABs? Now there you go and try to prove me the wallflower when I just avowed that I've never met a man as quick to snap as Rob. McMillin, your reign is over!

And one more: Evans might be benefiting from that Salt Lake lift, or he may be just sticking it to those Mormon infidels, but in any case, he hit pretty well in Palm Beach and Springfield as well, neither park particularly elevated. At some point we might just have to buy this halo destiny business wholesale.

Rob - Howie/2B is the least of our problems right now. you ought to be spending your keyboard dealing with our alleged DH. to me, that's the biggest issue and we should turn as quickly as we can to another option. and we have plenty of other options.

c'mon Rob. Lay off Howie. Guy is hitting .340 being fed a steady diet of junk. And btw, his "many" 0-fers total 3, the exact same number as Vladdy.
