Pickoff Moves

On a morning I don't have a lot of time...

Today's Birthdays

Guy Cantrell BRO b. 1904, played 1925, 1927, d. 1961-01-31

Brian Dorsett CAL b. 1961, played 1988

Fred Frankhouse BRO b. 1904, played 1936-1938, All-Star: 1934, d. 1989-08-17. A right-handed Jarrod Washburn in that he found success late and then dropped it behind the sofa cushions again after a 17-9 season in 1934; he spent the last four years of his career with the Dodgers.

Roy Gleason LAN b. 1943, played 1963. A native of Garden Grove, he was a promising rookie taken from baseball by the military draft during Vietnam. He played in eight games, and in his sole major-league at bat, he got a double. It was 1963, and the Dodgers won the World Series. As with all players, he got a ring, but he made the mistake of taking it with him to Vietnam — where he lost it.

He got injured, won a Purple Heart, and returned to civilian life. He hurt his shoulder in a car accident, and that insult finally ended his baseball career, despite trying out with both the Angels and Dodgers in 1969 and 1970. Four years ago, the Dodgers presented him with a replacement replica ring. "A lot of people who read about it say my life is a sad story," Gleason says. "But I can't complain. I've had a better life than most."

Kirk McCaskill CAL b. 1961, played 1985-1991. A Top 100 Angel, he started his amateur career split between baseball and hockey. He pitched poorly in the 1986 ALCS, losing both games he was in, and in 1987, elbow problems sidelined him for much of the rest of the season. He pitched four more years of dwindling effectiveness for the Angels, but his best years were behind him.

Tiny Osborne BRO b. 1893, played 1924-1925, d. 1969-01-05

Oscar Robles LAN b. 1976, played 2005. From what I recall, he's now back in the Mexican Leagues.

About That Cleveland Snow...

Looks like it's tapering off, so the M's and Indians ought to be able to get at least one game of their doubleheader in, but the rest of the week is filled with rain. The Angels have a chance of getting in a freezing cold game tomorrow, but...

Boo-Birds Of Unhappiness: Dodgers 10, Giants 4

I understand the Giants fans were booing Barry Zito. Good. It also pleased me to hear that Luis Gonzales managed to get a couple balls (one just barely, from what I saw on the highlights) over the fence. Good for him. He might yet be a useful player, even in his dotage.
