Suddenly, September 18, 2006 Seems Less Special
Remember this? Somehow the Red Sox ripped four consecutive home runs off Yankees starter Chase Wright, now only the fifth time in major league history this feat has been accomplished. There were some interesting connections in this spree to both the Angels and Dodgers:
- Red Sox manager Terry Francona is the son of Tito Francona, who participated in the July 31, 1963 beatdown of the Angels by the Indians against Paul Foytack, the only pitcher previously to have given up all four consecutive homers by himself. Today is also Terry Francona's birthday.
- J.D. Drew was the second player to homer in the sequence, which went Manny Ramirez, Drew, Mike Lowell, and Jason Varitek. Drew was also the second player to homer in the 4+1 homer game for the Dodgers.
Update: You all can stop writing in now. I know it was Chase Wright, not injury-plagued Jaret, whom I incorrectly believed was still with the Yanks. Poor kid was making his second major league start, and previous to his April 17 victory over Cleveland, he hadn't played at any level past single-A ball.
Comments:
I hate that ESPN feels there are two teams in baseball--the Yankees and the not-Yankees also known as the Red Sox.
That said, that was one incredible game tonight.

Interesting that people wrote in to correct you on which Wright gave up the homers, but no one has mentioned that it's September 18, 2006 that suddenly seems less special.
As you point out, though, our four consecutive HRs were in a pennant race. The Red Sox home runs are in a meaningless April...
...I still give ours the nod. Screw ESPN's east coast bias.
