The Loss That Feels Like A Win: Royals 3, Angels 1

A lousy, drizzly night at Kauffman Field, ending in an Angels loss, yet there were some good things to take from it.
  1. It wasn't a blowout. The Angels had plenty of baserunners.
  2. Ervin Santana pitched well on the road, putting up a quality start plus, with three earned runs in 6.1 IP. That's his best outing since a September 24, 2006 game at Oakland in which he surrendered only one run (earned) over eight innings; the Angels won 7-1, and Santana collected a win as well. Here's a list of all Ervin's road starts for 2006; red means he did not achieve a quality start, green means he did.

    Categorizing these:
    • Overall, Santana had six quality starts on the road. The Angels won all those games.
    • The team won only two of the games where he did not have a quality start, the July 4 game against Seattle and the August 15 game against Texas. Santana was the losing pitcher in six of those.
    • Santana's August 10 start against Cleveland ended after only one out when he took a line drive to the shin.
That means that ten of his outings were unacceptable. He has about twice as many bad outings as good on the road, which means that he's more or less on schedule when you consider that he has never won a road game in April.
  3. Finally, Darren Oliver had a good game. He's not as bad as his ERA would make him seem; remove his two bad games, and Oliver has an ERA of zero.
So, forget about the offense (non-Reggie Willits division, of course). For now, I'm staying sunny side up.

I agree that it wasn't a terribly disturbing loss. Except don't you think it might've ended up a win if Scoscia had gone to his bullpen sooner?
