Minor League Scorebook

2007-05-11: Memphis 3, Salt Lake 2 #
Evans: 2-4, 2 2B, 1 K
Wood: 0-4
Eylward: 2-4, 1 RBI
Gorneault: 1-4, 1 K
Mathis: 1-3, 1 2B
Saunders: (L, 1-2), 6.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 3.04 ERA
Gwyn: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0.96 ERA
Brandon Wood, back to his 0-fer ways, while Terry Evans doesn't know how to stop hitting. Poor Joe Saunders turned in a very good outing, made worse when left fielder Coby Smith botched Tagg Bozied's single. Bozied also homered in two, making him responsible for all the Redbird scoring in this game.

Jeff Mathis has a weak five-game hitting streak (one hit in each). Terry Evans has had multiple hits in five of his last seven games. He's still slugging .540, and most of that is coming in on doubles.

2007-05-11: Tulsa 1, Arkansas 3 #
Rodriguez, S: 0-3, 1 K
Collins: 1-3, 1 2B, 3 RBI
Rodriguez, F: (W, 1-0), 6.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 3.86 ERA
Arredondo: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.77 ERA
Michael Collins' bases-clearing double in the first was all the scoring the Travs needed to get the win in this makeup doubleheader. Fernando Rodriguez piched a very good game, getting a win in only his second start of the year.
2007-05-11: Tulsa 5, Arkansas 4 #
Morrissey: 1-2, 1 2B, 2 BB, 1 K
Rodriguez, S: 0-3, 1 RBI
Collins: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 K
Wipke: 0-2, 2 BB
Gonzalez, M: 2.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 4.66 ERA
Thompson: 3.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 2.60 ERA
Rodriguez, R: (L, 0-4) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 5.00 ERA
"Extra" innings kept this game going until midnight local time. Tulsa struck first in the first by jumping on starter Miguel Gonzalez for three runs. Gonzalez, previously had worked out of the bullpen, apparently did so in place of Daniel Davidson, whose status is unknown at this time. Michael Collins had a leadoff double to lead off the two-run fourth to eventually tie the game, but Tulsa won on Matt Miller's sac fly in the eighth. Rafael Rodriguez dropped to 0-4 on the loss.
2007-05-11: Rancho Cucamonga 2, Bakersfield 1 #
Statia: 1-2, 2 BB
Toussaint: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Butcher: (W, 3-2), 6.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 0.96 ERA
Former Oxnard College product Brok Butcher has a ridiculous 0.96 ERA after this game. Usually the career arc of these kinds of guys involves selling insurance or used cars, because pitchers who can make outs with 5.94 K/9 rates at this level don't generally survive once exposed to AA bats. Still, Joe Saunders didn't have compelling K/9 rates in his minor league career, but what he did do was to almost never walk anybody. Butcher's 5.00 K/BB rate — and his 1.42 groundball/flyball ratio — tells you he might yet be successful in Arkansas, his next stop if he keeps this up. He's especially dominant versus righties, with a .213 average and a 0.40 ERA against. He's moving up the system quickly, having gone from the AZL Angels to Orem to Cedar Rapids in one season, and he's proving a quick study in the Cal League as well.

Drew Toussaint's seventh-inning two-out solo homer provided the game-winning RBI for the Quakes. Dallas Morris had an unassisted double play in the bottom of the seventh when Terry Blunt lined out, getting reliever Tim Mattison — who gave up the only run of the game on a John Mayberry solo homer — out of the inning.

Darren O'Day got the save pitching a scoreless inning and a third. He sports a 9.58 K/9 and a 3.00 K/BB ratio, earned over ten and a third innings so far. 6'4", 220 lb. O'Day used to close for U. Florida, and earned eight saves with them in 2006. He surely seems to know what he's doing on the mound for Rancho in the ninth.

2007-05-11: Cedar Rapids 2, West Michigan 4 #
Smith: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Pettit: 3-4, 3 2B
Trumbo: 0-4, 2 K
Mount: 0-1
Conger: 1-1
Phillips: 0-4, 4 K
Perez: 2-4, 1 2B
Holler: (L, 0-2), 4.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 3.68 ERA
Connelly: 2.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 5.00 ERA
Arredondo: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2.63 ERA
Blake Holler has yet to post a quality start in two attempts, and he took the loss in this game despite only giving up one run over 4.2 innings. Christopher Pettit hit three doubles batting third; in the first, it was with two out, and Mark Trumbo grounded out; in the fourth, it was leadoff, and West Michigan starter (also the winning pitcher) Duane Below struck out the next three batters; and in the eighth he was doubled up on Mark Trumbo's one-out pop to short. (Do they not believe in the infield fly rule in the Midwest League?)

Below struck out 14 Kernels over six innings, striking out the side three times, tying the current Midwest League season record. The loss ends a four-game winning streak.

2007-05-11: Oklahoma 19, Las Vegas 5 #
Abreu: 0-3, 2 BB, 1 K
Kemp: 1-5, 2 K
Loney: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB
Bigbie: 1-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Maza: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 K
Miller: (L, 1-1), 0.1 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 4 BB, 6.46 ERA
LaMura: 2.2 IP, 6 R, 3 ER, 7 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 4.05 ERA
Hoorelbeke: 1.1 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 6.39 ERA
Kuo: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 3.48 ERA
Perez: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
An ugly game for Greg Miller, who has had exactly one quality start this year; outside of that one, he has had seven starts and has failed to get into the sixth in any of them.

The game started badly for Miller, as he plunked leadoff batter Freddy Guzman, balked, and wild pitched Guzman to third. Tug Hulett's sac fly cashed in Guzman, but then Miller walked Marlon Byrd and Jason Botts in succession, and yet another wild pitch moved the baserunners to second and third. He walked the bases loaded with Kevin Mahar, and then walked Desi Relaford to force in a run. B.J. LaMura came in to give up a grand slam to Nate Gold, thus cashing in all of Miller's baserunners, and staking Oklahoma to a 6-0 lead before two outs had been recorded.

LaMura didn't have much in the way of control, either, as he wild pitched in a run in the second, and gave up a two-run jack to Relaford later that inning. Matt Riley replaced LaMura to begin the fourth, but he hardly did better, surrendering consecutive doubles to lead off, and soon the Redhawks plated another six.

The 51's did most of their scoring in the bottom of the fourth, when Redhawk starter Josh Rupe wild pitched home James Loney, who got aboard on a double. RBI singles from Choo Freeman and Luis Maza accounted for the remaining three runs.

Hong-Chih Kuo pitched two scoreless innings starting in the sixth.

At some point, things get so ridiculous that the teams allow a non-pitcher to pitch, and Tomas Perez got a chance to do so in the eighth. It was his first appearance as a pitcher since he was with the Phillies in a similar situation five years ago, making the final out of a 17-3 blowout on May 13, 2002 at the hands of the Astros. Perez managed to retire the side, despite surrendering four hits and a walk, getting into a two-on, two-out jam in the top of the ninth.

2007-05-11: Birmingham 2, Jacksonville 1 #
Hu, C: 2-3, 1 BB
Ruan: 2-4
Paul: 0-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Juarez: 7.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 6 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 3.43 ERA
Hammes: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.35 ERA
Zach Hammes took the loss in relief, allowing the winning run to reach scoring position in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch that scored on Sean Smith's GIDP. Xavier Paul's sac fly RBI was the only run scored by the Suns.
2007-05-11: Inland Empire 6, Visalia 1 #
De Jesus: 0-3, 1 BB
Dewitt: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
May: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Mitchell: 2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Godwin: 3-3, 1 RBI
McDonald: (W, 2-3), 7.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 6 K, 3 BB, 3.47 ERA
Troncoso: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.27 ERA
Blake Dewitt, Lucas May, and Russell Mitchell all homered in the top of the seventh to launch a four-run inning; Dewitt and May had solo homers, while Mitchell hit his with Travis Denker on base. Adam Godwin was perfect at the plate, going 3-3 with an RBI.

James McDonald had his best game of the year, a three-hit shutout over seven innings with six strikeouts. Three of his last four starts have been quality starts, allowing a maximum of one earned run in each. With a 10.4 K/9 rate and a 3.00 K/BB ratio, the former Goldenwest College (go Rustlers!) pitcher is looking very good for a midseason promotion.

2007-05-11: Wisconsin 5, Great Lakes 6 #
Hunt: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Mattingly: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Santana: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Van Slyke: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Castillo: 5.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 7.71 ERA
Ramirez: (W, 2-0) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 1.29 ERA
The Loons won this one in the bottom of the ninth when Bridger Hunt tied the game with an RBI single. Hunt then stole second, and when Adolfo Gonzalez reached first on Timber Rattler third baseman Alex Liddi's wild throw to first, Hunt scored the winning run.
