News
- The Dodgers sold Kelly Stinnett to St. Louis. He will replace Yadier Molina in the Cards' lineup; Molina's broken wrist will keep him sidelined at least a month.
- Not really Dodger or Angel related, but since it's NL West, I'll mention (a little late) that the Padres have given up on their 2004 first-round draft pick, Matt Bush, as a shortstop. Instead, he's being converted to the mound. Jered Weaver's working out pretty well for the Angels, don't you think?
- What happens to a minor leaguer who gets caught doping? Ask Karl Gelinas, whom the Angels released earlier this year after serving a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, stanolozol.
A year later, he's pitching for the independent Capitales, looking for a second chance.
Last year, The Gazette told Gelinas's story, an astonishingly frank account of the pressures and ruthless competition a young player faces as he tries to make his big-league dream come true.
Sometimes the pressures lead you to make decisions you quickly regret. Such was the case with Gelinas, who cut short an experiment with stanozolol when he was too wracked by guilt, too petrified to be found out, to carry on despite the almost-immediate physical benefits.
When he returned to his Class A team in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., in early June, the rest of the season was a road filled with potholes as he tried to prove, despite the scarlet "S" on his jersey, that he was a pitcher worth believing in. "I was either really good, or really rotten," Gelinas said. "It was like I was trying to win three games at once."
He ended the season with a 3-8 record and a 5.68 ERA in 16 games, but remained with the Angels and was invited to their minor-league camp this spring.
Gelinas's 11th-hour release in late March had nothing to do with the positive test, they said. It was a surplus in the system, a bottleneck that had pitchers with a full season of Triple-A experience back down in Double-A this season, with the resulting trickle-down effect.

Tough loss for the Bees, who couldn't punch through against the Mets' number one pitching prospect Mike Pelfrey. Former Dodger Steve Schmoll was one of three relievers to complete the string and put up a seven-hitter against the Bees.
Rodriguez, S: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Collins: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 K
Leahy: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K

Brewer: 1-2, 2 BB
Ortega: (W, 4-4), 5.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 7 K, 4 BB, 3.01 ERA
The most strikeouts Anthony Ortega has had in a single game to date, but still one out away from a quality start, so he must have been using a ton of pitches to get there; he left the game with a man on base and two out, which isn't a bad thing. Coby Smith homered, a solo shot, in the victory.
Ortiz, W: 2-3, 1 2B
Brandt: (L, 3-2), 4.1 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 1.79 ERA

Maza: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Barnes: 2-4, 1 RBI
LaRoche: 0-1
Young: 1-1, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Houlton: 4.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 3.57 ERA
LaMura: (BS, 2)(L, 1-2) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 6.60 ERA
A lot of great offensive performances here, including a two-homer game by Mitch Jones, but the pitching wasn't able to keep up. That included D.J. Houlton, who only went four innings and delivered five runs, all earned. If there were ever a time the Dodgers needed him to step up, this game was it.
Paul: 0-2, 3 BB
Dunlap: 2-2, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB
McDougall: 2-4, 1 2B, 3 RBI
Lindsey: 2-2, 1 RBI
Cyr: 3.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 9 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 2.84 ERA
Troncoso: (W, 1-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 3.24 ERA
Gonzalez, L: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 2.70 ERA
A romp fueled mostly by a big six-run seventh inning, capped by Marshall McDougall's two-run double. Chin-Lung Hu raised his average to .338 with this game. Eric Cyr didn't get out of the fourth, but a relay team of three relievers pitched 5.2 innings of scoreless ball.
Gonzalez: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 BB
Perez: 2-6, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K
Mattingly: 4-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Fuller: 3-3, 2 BB
Apodaca: 3-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
Kershaw: (W, 6-2), 5.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 6 K, 3 BB, 2.13 ERA
Clayton Kershaw's had better days, and the bullpen melted down for five runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Loons held on for a 10-9 victory. Preston Mattingly had his best game of the season with a 4-5 game batting in the 6-hole and raising his average to .242. Eduardo Perez had a solo homer and a bases-clearing double in the fourth to drive in four altogether.
