Helene Elliot On Reg-gie! Willits
The subject of the ballyard chant:Willits loves it when the Angel Stadium crowd turns his first name into a sing-song chant, like the serenade offered a generation ago to another Reggie named Jackson.Willits is in the top three in the AL in average and OBP, going 2-for-3 in yesterday's game and walking twice."I'm not really sure why they do it," Willits said in the soft drawl of his native Oklahoma. "It's humbling to hear something like that. For them to recognize you like that, to care enough about you, that means a lot."
Roster Notes
- In case you missed it in today's Minor League Scorebook post, Justin Speier returned to the mound and pitched a scoreless frame for the AZL Angels.
- Speaking of sidelined Halos, John Lackey says he'll be ready to go on Monday on his blog:
It's been different, I'm not going to lie. This is the first time I've moved back since I was drafted in '99, but I don't think it's a big deal. We had a day off so I get two extra days rest. After the cortizone shot it's loosened up and I've just been doing some shoulder exercises every other day to get the strength back. They asked me to take it easy on the upper body lifting this week so I've slowed that down this time through.
- Casey Kotchman took batting practice Saturday, fielded ground balls, and took part in other baseball activities. It's unknown if he'll play today.
- Jered Weaver will make his next start on Wednesday.
- Nomar Garciaparra missed yesterday's game because of flulike symptoms.
- Yhency Brazoban's labrum repair surgery was successful; he will miss the rest of the season.
- The Blue Jays are entertaining offers for Troy Glaus according to Ken Rosenthal, and he speculates that all three Southern California teams might be interested.
- Mike Piazza is still building up shoulder strength, but he won't be ready to return to the A's for at least another week.
