Angels Send Colon To 15-Day DL, Make Other Roster Moves
None of these moves is particularly surprising. Colon has likely thrown his last pitch as an Angel, and even if he hasn't, his chances of staying at AAA longer than he might like are pretty high. Morales wasn't getting any playing time anyway, Nathan Haynes can't go down without going through waivers, the Angels don't seem to mind letting Brandon Wood's service clock tick while he rots on the bench, and finally, the Angels really needed additional bullpen help with the recent bad performances by Colon and Santana.
Gwyn and Jones will both assume mopup duties, and if Bootcheck and Moseley don't cut it in the rotation and in less-leveraged relief situations ahead of Speier and Shields, one or both of them will see significant playing time, Gwyn particularly. Gwyn had a 3:1 K:BB ratio for the Bees (actually 46:15), and an impressive 2.78 ERA in the PCL.
Update: Also via AP, which quotes Mike Scioscia as saying "Ervin [Santana] is an option, but we'll take this one step at a time." According to tonight's radio broadcast, Colon's elbow was diagnosed following an MRI with a posterior impingement on the right elbow.
