News
- One of many things I missed during the long outage around these
parts: the Angels came
to terms with prep pitcher Jon Bachanov, the team's compensation-round
pick, the 58th overall.
[Director of Scouting Eddie] Bane also announced the Angels have agreed to terms with seven additional players selected in the recent 2007 draft, including INF Andrew Romine (5th pick) from Arizona State Univ., prep LHP Trevor Reckling (8th), and high school OF Greg Mann (9th).
Bachanov fell as low as he did partly due to his representation, the notorious Scott Boras, who was supposed to want a lucrative payday; he ended up with a $550,000 bonus ($).Only one of the Angels' top ten picks now remain unsigned, another Boras client in third-rounder RHP Matt Harvey. BA has no bonus posted yet for 8th-round prepster LHP Trevor Reckling.
- The Dodgers named their top minor leaguers for June, which included Delwyn Young as Player of the Month, Jonathan Meloan as Pitcher of the Month.
- Shortstop Chin-Lung Hu made BA's Prospect Hot Sheet this week for homering three times in his first four AAA games.
- The Dodgers' Delwyn Young (Las Vegas) and the Angels' Andrew Romine (Orem) were both named Offensive Players of the Week. Arkansas' Miguel Gonzalez and Esmerlin Jimenez made the cut for the Angels as Pitchers of the Week; no Dodger prospects were so named.
- As always on Mondays, here's the master MILB.com league notebook post.

Bulger: (S, 5), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 4.25 ERA
A real slugfest, with a pair of homers from Greg Porter and Ryan Budde, both off Tomo Ohka; Porter's was his second three-run blast in as many days. The normally steady Marcus Gwyn gave three back in the top of the eighth, as Ronnie Prettyman felt his swing, at least, was very pretty, knocking one over the rightfield wall for a three-run blast. Jason Bulger got the save.
Sandoval, F: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Rodriguez, S: 2-5, 2 RBI, 1 K
Collins: 1-4
Smith, Co: 2-4
Gonzalez, M: 5.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 8 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 2.84 ERA
Rodriguez, R: 1.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 5.80 ERA

O'Day: (BS, 1), 1.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 3.60 ERA
The Travs jumped on Wranglers starter Greg Atencio for four runs in the first, and extended their lead to 7-3 by the end of the sixth, but Bill Edwards (who took the loss) and Darren O'Day combined gave up six runs in the eighth, with Edwards retiring only a single batter. Starter Miguel Gonzalez was in line for the win until Edwards implosion, pitching five innings of three run ball, one of which was unearned thanks to a Sean Rodriguez throwing error in the fifth.
Renz: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Mosebach: (L, 9-6), 5.2 IP, 8 R, 6 ER, 9 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 4 HR, 4.46 ERA
Arredondo: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 10.93 ERA
JetHawks starter Kristopher Johnson and reliever Cody McAllister six-hit the Quakes into submission in this drubbing; Bobby Mosebach took virtually all the damage himself, with two of his eight runs unearned thanks to a sixth inning throwing error by 3B Jeff Larue. Larue was one of two players whose contracts were recently purchased from the Golden Baseball League, the other being RHP Alex McRobbie.
Phillips: 3-5
Sweeney: 2-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Trumbo: 2-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Walker: 2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Nieves: 2-2, 1 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 2 BB

Mendoza: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 9.39 ERA
Leadoff man Wilberto Ortiz hit his fifth homer of the season, and Brian Walker also homered in a shutout rout of Fort Wayne. The closest the Wizards ever got to scoring was in the bottom of the second, when they managed consecutive one-out singles off Sean O'Sullivan, who four-hit his opponents. Tommy Mendoza made his third appearance of the year for the Kernels, pitching his first game without surrendering a run.
Mark Trumbo continued his hot July with two hits; he's got a .340/.393/.420 line this month with 11 strikeouts in 50 at-bats.
Veras: (L, 3-2), 3.1 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 7 H, 1 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 8.26 ERA
Holland: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 7.20 ERA
Vladimir Veras continues to struggle, taking his worst loss in the Pioneer League so far this year. Gordon Gronkowski went "only" 1-for-4, lowering his season average to .430; Jeremy Moore drove in one of the Owlz' three runs, and had three hits on the night.
Bourjos: 3-5, 1 RBI
Castillo: 1-3, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Colmenares: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
Anton: (W, 3-0), 5.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 1.89 ERA
Here's Peter Bourjos completing a rehab assignment, helping contribute to a rout of the AZL Rangers. Michael Anton made his fifth appearance and got his third consecutive win. 20-year-old second baseman Ivan Contreras had a season-high four RBIs, and got three hits in the game for the seventh time this year.
Hu, C: 3-5, 1 K
Young: 2-5
Lindsey: 3-3, 1 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 1 BB
LaRoche: 2-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI
Davis: 2-5, 1 RBI
Ruan: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Lundberg: (W, 5-4), 5.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 6.03 ERA
Wright: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 6.43 ERA
Andy LaRoche and John Lindsey hit two dingers apiece in this slugfest. It was a good thing considering Portland crushed a pair of grand slams off 51's pitching, with Pete LaForest tagging Spike Lundberg in the first (LaForest's fourth slam of the year!), and Peter Ciofrone getting a two-out slam off reliever Matt Riley in the top of the seventh.
Lindsey has been positively on fire since playing for Las Vegas, with a .358/.430/.755 line, and he's getting even hotter in July (.400/.444/1.025). It was Lindsey's third multi-homer game with the 51's this year; he attributes his hitting streak partly to the birth of his son, John III.
Lundberg got the win despite his unimpressive outing thanks to a spectacular offensive showing against a former Dodger prospect, Ryan Ketchner and two Beavers relievers, Steve Watkins and Justin Hampson, who surrendered four runs apiece. It was Ketchner's third straight loss.
Mitchell: 3-5, 1 2B, 2 K
De Jesus: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
White, C: 6.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 5.91 ERA
Alvarez, C: (L, 1-1) (in relief), 2.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 2.45 ERA
Carlos Alvarez took the loss on Travis Ishikawa's walkoff single in the bottom of the 12th. Coby White pitched a textbook quality start but did not figure in the decision.
Perez: 2-4, 1 BB
Bell: 0-5, 3 K
Giles: 3-5, 2 2B, 1 K
Mattingly: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
Santana: 1-4, 1 2B
Rivera, J: 0-4
Castillo: 6.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 4.66 ERA
Sanfler: (BS, 2)(L, 2-4) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.33 ERA
Brooks, D: (L, 1-4), 4.0 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 7 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 7.96 ERA
Diaz: 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.91 ERA
