Minor League Scorebook
News
- It's Monday, which means it's time for the usual MILB.com wrap.
- Ogden's Travis Vetters was named Player of the Week for his hot .350 week in which he drove in nine and sported an .850 SLG. No Angel or Dodger pitcher was named Pitcher of the Week.
- Two Dodgers made the Prospect
Hot Sheet ($):
12. James McDonald, rhp, Double-A Jacksonville (Dodgers)
McDonald is, I confess, one of my favorite stories if not the favorite story among Dodger prospects, if only because he pitched for Goldenwest College, which I attended years ago.Cruise control. McDonald is handling his first taste of the mound in Double-A with aplomb, allowing just four earned runs in 33 innings--and never more than one in any outing. Overall, the 22-year-old is 5-1, 1.10 with a 39-9 strikeout-walk ratio for the Suns.
Blake Dewitt made the "Not-So-Hot" list for an ice-cold .138 in August with no RBIs. One other player of note on the Hot Sheet was the Rangers' Edinson Volquez. Volquez used to be one of the trio of young pitchers who were going to take the Rangers out of their chronic pitching slump, but then injuries and ineffectiveness hit. He's had 18 strikeouts four walks and just one earned run in his last 13 innings. It could be a sign of better things.
Red Sox RHP Clay Buchholz makes an appearance on the list, and Baseball America speculates that the 23-year-old may get the start against the Angels in one of the two doubleheader games on Friday.
Finally, in the fun-but-who-cares department, Pete LaForest gets to take a turn as Crash Davis: he's getting a callup to the Padres, but he also has 29 dingers on the year and had a chance to end the season with the PCL home run title. I'm sure he'd rather be in the Show.
Scores
Evans: 2-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Kendrick: 0-3, 1 K
Eylward: 2-2, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Morales: 2-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB
Wood: 3-5, 2 RBI, 1 K
Porter: 4-5, 1 2B
Murphy: 4-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI
Wilson: 1-5, 1 RBI, 2 K
Bonilla: (W, 11-6), 6.0 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 4 BB, 5.55 ERA
Thompson: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 2.08 ERA
A real slaughter by the Bees that mostly came in late innings, as the Beavers used a patchwork pitching staff to assemble a full game. Henry Bonilla got his PCL-leading 11th win on a run-support-happy 5.55 ERA; his one unearned run coming on a pair of errors by Bobby Wilson and shortstop Casey Smith.
This game marked Howie Kendrick's return to AAA action, going 0-for-3; he was replaced in the top of the sixth by Casey Smith. Kendry Morales homered twice, drove in four runs (on two two-run homers), and even walked. He's hitting .459/.487/.757 on the young month, and wow. Several Bees players had three- or four-hit nights, including Brandon Wood (who drove in two besides), Greg Porter, and Tommy Murphy (who really needed it).
Rich Thompson quietly continued to do his job without much ado, finishing the game by pitching two scoreless innings, striking out two and giving up two hits. I won't be a bit surprised if he gets a September callup.
Johnson: 2-4
Collins: 1-3, 2 RBI
Green: (W, 9-6), 6.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 6 K, 3 BB, 3.85 ERA
O'Day: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 3.22 ERA
Here's another guy who isn't getting maybe as much recognition as he should because of his sometimes rocky first half: Nick Green, who here posted his sixth quality start in his eight attempts since the Texas League All-Star game. In fact, Green took a no-hitter into the sixth when he gave up an infield single to Chase Headley; ultimately he tossed 6.2 innings of two-hit, shutout ball. One reason he hasn't gotten much acclaim: a 5.19 K/9 over that span. He doesn't walk many, though (30:11 K:BB ratio).
Michael Collins drove in two of the Travs' four runs on an RBI single in the four-run fourth.
Schoeninger: (L, 5-3), 4.0 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 6.75 ERA
Since his promotion to the Cal League, little has gone right for Tim Schoeninger. He is striking out a decent number of batters (6.94 K/9) but he's giving up a ton of hits (63 in 46.2 IP), too.
Bourjos: 1-3, 1 K
Trumbo: 0-4, 1 K
Mount: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Bell: 7.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 4.53 ERA
Diaz: (L, 1-5) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 4.64 ERA
Scott Van Slyke reached and got to second in the ninth inning on Tyler Johnson's fielding error, and scored the winning run on Francisco Lizarraga's RBI single off losing pitcher Amalio Diaz. Trevor Bell posted his second consecutive quality start, giving up two runs, one unearned on a Mark Trumbo fielding error. Ryan Mount homered in the loss, a solo shot in the second.
For the Loons, Steven Johnson picked up his third win, bringing his ERA down to a less-horrific 4.96 by pitching eight innings of one-earned-run ball. Eduardo Perez had two hits and drove in two.
Tobin: 6.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.64 ERA
Veras: (W, 5-4) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 6.80 ERA
Brasier: (S, 6), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 1.74 ERA
Mason Tobin got his first quality start in the Pioneer League despite surrendering his first two earned runs in that league. Vladimir Veras got the win in relief, making three straight appearances in which he (a) did not start, and (b) gave up no earned runs.
McDougall: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Riley: (L, 4-3) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 6.54 ERA
Meloan: 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 2.13 ERA
Marshall McDougall's solo homer in the sixth launched a four-run inning for the 51's, who have now lost five straight games. Jonathan Meloan gave up a run in the eighth and allowed inherited baserunner Kevin Melillo to score as well.
Former Angel Jeff DaVanon got three hits and walked for the River Cats.
Denker, T: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Bell: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Bastardo: 4.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 6 K, 3 BB, 5.00 ERA
Castillo, J: (W, 5-8) (in relief), 4.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.44 ERA
Santana: 1-4, 1 2B, 3 K
Perez: 2-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Johnson: (W, 3-5), 8.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 6 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 4.96 ERA
Melgarejo: (S, 2), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 6.35 ERA
Garabedian: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Gallagher: 2-4
Kanaby: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Blevins: (L, 2-2), 4.2 IP, 7 R, 2 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 3.86 ERA
Dasni: 2.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 1.23 ERA
Koss: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.82 ERA
Jaime Pedroza homered twice in a losing effort against the Brewers, driving in three. Chales Dasni continues to strike out about half the batters he sees (12.00 K/9), and here made his third appearance of the year with the Raptors.
Lambo: 2-4, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Garcia, Y: 3-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Guzman, A: 2-3, 1 RBI
Erickson: 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Danielson: 4.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1.98 ERA
Contreras: (W, 3-1) (in relief), 5.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 3.33 ERA

It might be time to say goodbye to Greg Jones, who's been an organizational soldier for sure, but who doesn't really have a future in the big leagues, at least not on a contending ball club like the Angels.
I did find this one website (CalLeaguers.com) that some aspiring scout put together that had "scouting reports" on Thompson in 04 and 05. The 05 one has some video of Thompson throwing. If nothing else, it's amusing to see how wrong he was about some now-familiar names...
