Haeger The (Not-So) Horrible: Cardinals 3, Dodgers 2

It's funny: yesterday, Randy Wolf gave up three and thanks to terrific run support (including his own missing-a-cycle-by-a-triple offensive output), Wolf got to be the hero. Today, Charlie Haeger gave up three and got stuck for the loss. The Dodgers actually held a 2-1 lead after the fifth on James Loney's RBI single, and for a time it looked as though they might hold it. But in one of those moments of odd symmetry, Rick Ankiel — the former pitcher — blasted a two-run home run off Haeger that proved the game winner.

The ninth inning, with the Dodgers' 3-4-5 hitters up, proved wholly anticlimactic, with Andre Ethier, Manny Ramirez, and Casey Blake going down in order against Trever Miller and Ryan Franklin in one of those pathetic outings where you hope for a longball to tie it, but all that happens is long flyouts to center. Meh.

Update: Only two of the pitches Haeger threw weren't knucklers. Interesting.

Didn't watch the 9th, but I've read Ethier and Manny swung at the first pitch. Therein lies the problem, though the team is more BB-prone than in recent years.

Plus Blake batting 5th is comical. Down to your last out, who would you rather have batting: Kemp or Blake?

Four pitches thrown to the Dodgers in the ninth. Four!
