Angels Minor League Notes

Angels recent pickup RHP (for two months!) Dominic Woody has done well for himself in early going, 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in 7.0 IP. Stephen Smith earlier suggested he might be an organizational pickup after Rich Thompson left to play for Australia in the Olympics. So far, the early returns are quite positive.

Casey Kotchman's swing has returned in AAA, as Baseball America names him Prospect of the Week. He's now hitting .350/.388/.580 with 13 doubles, 3 HR, and 26 RBI in 120 AB. Nice job, Casey!

Comments:
Only a .038 difference between his AVG and OBP? That's more than a little troubling.

OBP-AVG is a crude metric, because it doesn't consider sacrifice flies. Instead, you should use

BB/(AB+BB+HBP+SF)

But Kotchman doesn't come out looking so good in this way, either; 4.7% of his plate appearances thus far ended with him taking a walk. The nagging question: has Mickey Hatcher ruined him?
