More ALDS Game 3 Notes
- Jay Jaffe's comments about yesterday's game included something I thought about earlier in the week, and that was the cold and rain likely hurt Johnson:
BP's injury expert, Will Carroll, noted on-list that Randy Johnson was having trouble trying to loosen his back. His pitches were up in the zone, though that appeared to be as much game plan as physically-induced result. Either way, he got slapped around by the Angels, giving up nine hits and five runs over three innings.
Yeah, I thought that was absolute garbage, too, classless behavior by a bunch we've lately come to expect it from. (Jay, I have a standing offer for you: next time you're in town and the Angels are home against the Yanks, I'll take you to the contest. It's really appalling.) Much more over there, including the other side of the second base play where "Cowboy" Joe West called Garret Anderson safe when Robinson Cano didn't touch the bag for the out at second.I had to cringe when the Yankee Stadium crowd booed Johnson upon his being taken out. No, he hasn't had a stellar year, but given his performance down the stretch, particularly the two big wins over the Red Sox in September, the Yanks wouldn't even be playing in October. It was a horseshit reaction from what's normally a classy group of fans, and even siting at home warm and dry, I was embarrassed to be a Yankee fan. Horseshit.
- Guys who call playoff series "over" before they actually are scare the pants off of me. (Okay, you got me: I'm wearing shorts right now.) But that's what Joe Sheehan's editor does at BPro today, making the way premature claim that neither the Red Sox nor the Yanks will advance for the first time in three years. He brings up the interesting point that the Yanks have left the Moose behind in Anaheim in case we get to a Game 5, so he won't have to travel. Let's hope it doesn't get that far.
- Nothing to do with much of anything, but the Los Angeles of Anaheim joking seems to have let up some. As I said at the time, just win. That is all we need, and all anyone needs.
- How upset must Fox be? First the Red Sox are out of it, next the Yanks appear on the verge of elimination, and then a rainout, so instead of a Saturday game with the Yanks, a deciding Game 5 might have to be played on a Monday.
- Orlando Cabrera remembers when Randy Johnson would tip his pitches. It must seem like only yesterday...

If you're talking about the teaser on the front page, I think you're misinterpreting it. It's saying that it won't be the Yankees vs. Red Sox for the first time since 2002. It doesn't say that *neither* team will make it. If you're talking about something else, I must have missed it.
