Colletti Baez A Reliever
In some ways the first real test of Ned Colletti was going to be what he was capable of getting for some of the prospects. In that regard, he appears to have fallen short by getting relievers Denys Baez and Lance Carter (update: and cash, and a PTBNL) for Chuck Tiffany and Edwin Jackson. Some of the points from Jon's analysis were that
- Bryan Smith's analysis tags Tiffany as a flawed player despite his high strikeouts.
- "Carter is being touted as a former All-Star, which [...] frankly, borders on intellectually dishonest" thanks to his mandatory appearance in the 2003 All Star game.
- Freed of the requirement to pitch more than an inning or two, Jackson could also be an effective reliever, and for a lot less. (Of course, the counterargument is that the organization's given up on him, and he needs a change of scenery, but isn't it a bit early to be doing that?)
- All may not be well with Gagné, and this trade is either an admission of this, or a proactive attempt to get depth since the team traded Duaner Sanchez.

call me a cynic, but part of me wonders if Ned isn't being told to dump Gagne, and the acquisitions in the offseason were to get some star power to offset it for ticket sales.
just a guess, but I'm surprised the payroll is as high as it is, and it wouldn't surprise me to see it back in the 80s before the season begins.

For me the payroll hasn't been as big a deal as how well it was spent. It's possible to spend a ton and still have poor results, viz the Mets.
The McCourts entire postseason has been built around PR. Gagne may leave as a free agent, but he won't be traded unless the team is flailing in July - and even then, doubtful.
the dodgers got a proven closer for two maybes ... that doesn't seem like such a bad deal to me.
(of course, the dodgers already have a proven closer, so it's a bit odd to get another one.)
