Colletti Baez A Reliever

In some ways the first real test of Ned Colletti was going to be what he was capable of getting for some of the prospects. In that regard, he appears to have fallen short by getting relievers Denys Baez and Lance Carter (update: and cash, and a PTBNL) for Chuck Tiffany and Edwin Jackson. Some of the points from Jon's analysis were that The trade has the whiff of desperation about it, no doubt about that. When Rich called me tonight to let me know who was being exchanged, we both shared a knowing belly laugh; dealing a pair of starter prospects for a pair of relievers just doesn't make sense. But then I realized something, something that didn't occur to me until just now: namely, this is a frank admission that there are at least two Dodger prospects who are essentially all reputation and nothing else. Gone are the days, paraphrasing from one of the BTF threads I'm too lazy to look up, when even a Dodger turd was highly regarded, because, hey, it's a Dodger turd. From that point of view, this was a practical move, if unsatisfying in some ways.

Update: BTF thread.

Update 1/15: Rich Lederer weighs in: "Colletti can no longer say that he is rebuilding the team without compromising the future."

Comments:
call me a cynic, but part of me wonders if Ned isn't being told to dump Gagne, and the acquisitions in the offseason were to get some star power to offset it for ticket sales.

just a guess, but I'm surprised the payroll is as high as it is, and it wouldn't surprise me to see it back in the 80s before the season begins.

I guess that's just me still not trusting the mccourts

For me the payroll hasn't been as big a deal as how well it was spent. It's possible to spend a ton and still have poor results, viz the Mets.

The McCourts entire postseason has been built around PR. Gagne may leave as a free agent, but he won't be traded unless the team is flailing in July - and even then, doubtful.

the dodgers got a proven closer for two maybes ... that doesn't seem like such a bad deal to me.

(of course, the dodgers already have a proven closer, so it's a bit odd to get another one.)

it does appear that coletti's going all out for next year, but the dodgers kinda need that after last year's fiasco.

err ... i guess 'next year' is really 'this year' ... forgot about that new years thingy.

hahaha "proven closer". never mind that baez is totally unremarkable in every aspect and has almost zero upside.
