So, Where Is The Love For Jered Weaver?

A good question, asked most recently by Deadspin:
Not since Fernando Valenzuela started 8-0 as a rookie for the Dodgers in 1981 has something like this happened. The problem is however, that Weaver-Mania has not hit LA as advertised. No one over there is talking about Weaver at all. We couldn't find a word about him on any Angels blog this morning, nor much about him in blog archives
Well, they rectified that soon enough by linking over here. Weaver's been terrific so far, and I've got nothing but praise — well, mostly praise — for his performance so far, but my favorite possibility for Weaver not getting the love is that he's simply been confused with Khalil Greene of the Padres, what with those blonde locks and all.

Comments:
someone at deadspin recommended "weaver-fever" as the appropriate successor name to fernandomania. i think it's got a nice ring to it. have you got weaver-fever, rob? :)

Weaver has been pitching pretty well for sure. But to even mention him with Fernando is kind of ridiculous. Fernando was simply dominant while Weaver has just won. Let's give him a few more starts before we anoint him a hof'er, shall we? My opinion is that Weaver will be a good but not great pitcher, a little better than his brother.

it's not exactly ridiculous...

fernando's first 8 starts in 1981:

8-0, 0.50 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 9.71 K/9
league average ERA=3.32

weaver's first 7 starts in 2006:
7-0, 1.15 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, 7.66 K/9, and i don't have this year's league average ERA, but last year's was 4.19

fernando was definitely better, especially when you consider all the complete games and increased innings load that came with it, but in the context of today's game (and especially the modern american league), i'd say what weaver is doing is pretty special. nobody's annointing him as a HOFer, but he's doing very well, and he's been pretty dominant so far. heck, even fernando, much as i love him, is not a HOFer.

I've been touting him like crazy at fantasybaseballcafe.com and people who haven't seen him pitch think it's just a honeymoon time for him. They don't see a Vrelander heater or a Liriano slider, so they assume it's fluke. I keep telling them that change of speed and hitting your locations makes average looking stuff actually a great pitch.
