The Tragedy Of Tony Conigliaro
In which the tragic events of August 18, 1967 are recalled:“The sound was terrible,” Petrocelli said. “It was the sound you’d hear if you smashed a piece of fruit.”Conigliaro was never the same again, damaging his vision and limiting his ability. He played through 1970 with the Red Sox, played a feckless 1971 season in California, and returned in 1975 after a three year layoff.Said Buck Rodgers, Hamilton’s catcher that night, “Everyone has talked about Jack Hamilton as head-hunting. But Tony was leaning way out over the plate. The actual pitch may have been two inches inside. I’ve seen 500 pitches that were a lot more inside than the one that hit Tony.”
Carlos Zambrano Extended: $90M/5 Years
So he won't be a Yankee. Good news for the Cubbies.Roster Notes
- The Angels expect Howie Kendrick to return Saturday, provided the Angels don't burn through a lot of pitchers today.
- Mike Napoli's next date in an Angels uniform will most likely be after this road trip. He'll need some rehab start time, too, meaning Ryan Budde will almost certainly get a start today.
- Bartolo Colon will throw to live hitters Saturday at Fenway.
- Randy Wolf's shoulder is taking a long time to heal. I figured that both he and Schmidt were done for the season, and if they could come back before the end thereof, it was only gravy.
- Mending fences:
Colletti said the organization hasn't changed its bullish opinion of top infield prospect Tony Abreu, even after he missed three weeks with symptoms of a sports hernia. There were indications the club was frustrated by the time it took Abreu to return to the field, which he did earlier this week. Abreu is considered the heir-apparent to second baseman Jeff Kent.
