Bills Redeems Kemp's Blunder: Dodgers 5, Padres 0

Dead, dead, deadski was about all I could think of watching the opening of yesterday's Dodger game, and just after I turned on the TV I found Jeff Kemp making one of the dumbest mistakes I have ever seen on a basepath (which says something coming from a man who watches a team that has at times featured Erick Aybar as a starter): in the fourth inning, Matt Kemp tried to steal second, and reached. Unfortunately for him, Jeff Kent (God will I be grateful when Kent is off the team, their names sound just too damned close) hit a flyball to center for the second out of the inning, and Kemp was all-too-easily doubled up.

Now there are those who say this was not a routine play or that it was a busted hit-and-run with no time to recover. To this I call BS, because, first of all, Kemp had time to not only orient himself toward the outfield and find out what was going on, he had an opportunity to hop twice on second and head back for home after standing there for what seemed like two or three seconds. Moreover, if he thought the outfield was deking him, why were two outfielders converging on the ball? Really, just a terrible play for Kemp, who seems to be full of these kinds of rookie mistakes lately.

Luckily for him, the Dodgers picked up their only win of the series, with Chad Billingsley on the mound to do the honors. As Jon points out, Bills is now the NL Rookie ERA leader for pitchers with a minimum of 80 innings pitched. Go, Bills.

Were those camo uniforms a special tribute to our servicemen, or are those regular alternate unis? There were two odd things about them: first, they actually had green batting helmets, and I'm not sure I've ever seen teams use alternate helmets. Second, the American flag on the sleeve was mirror-image (with the stars in the upper right). As the kids say, what's up with that? I checked the Padres' Web site and couldn't find any mention of the unis.

I believe they trot them out for federal holidays.

Ah! Thanks, Rob.
