Pickoff Moves

Wolf At The Door: Padres 4, Dodgers 1

A steady erosion of Chad Billingsley by the Padres, you know things weren't working quite right for Bills when even quadruple-A player Edgar Gonzaleznot the pitcher, but Adrian's older, 30-year-old rookie, brother — homers against you. Not a terrible night for Chad, but not a great one, either.

Andy LaRoche, playing first base in his first start with the Dodgers this year, hit a two-out solo homer in the top of the fourth. Otherwise, the Dodgers only reached third base twice, and neither of those baserunners scored, as ex-Dodger Randy Wolf and two relievers combined for a five-hitter against his old team.

Blake DeWitt Named May Rookie Of The Month

When did this start? I'd never heard tell of such an award, but anyhow, Blake DeWitt won it. Congratulations, kid.

Bartolo Colon Goes 4-1, Gets 150th Career Win: Red Sox 6, Orioles 3

Baseball-Reference says Bartolo Colon is getting 5.86 runs/game of run support, which should tell you just how inflated that 4-1 record is, but he got his fourth with the Red Sox yesterday against the O's, and the 150th of his career. He's actually got a decent 6.83 K/9 rate, so it's not like it's smoke and mirrors.

In Which The LA Dodgers Almost Became The LA Senators

KPCC's second part of their seven-part series on the Dodgers' move to Los Angeles:
[Kitty] Felde: By the fall of 1956, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors got into the act. Hahn, the youngest board member, was dispatched to the World Series to see if he could bring a major league team to Southern California. Hahn flew to New York for the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

[Kenneth] Hahn: Vincent Flaherty was going back to cover, so we went back together. And he says, "Now, Kenny, you'll never get a winner to come to Los Angeles. Let's go for the bottom of the league." I said, "Great." He said, "Well I know Calvin Griffith."

Shudder.

Comments:
Rob, thanks for giving me the Rookie of the Month idea.

Rob, just checking here: he is still classified as a Rookie, right? I have him at < 130 ABs last year, but I'm not sure if exceeded the 45 day part (I don't think so, since the Sept dates don't count as 25-man roster times, right?). Yikes, this is confusing.

Not sure how DeWitt couldn't be classified as a rookie considering he was never in a major league uniform prior to this year.

sorry, I meant "rookie of the minute" for LaRoche (riff posted over at SoSG)

sorry--to be clear: is LaRoche considered a rookie?
