Worried? Don't Be, Angel Fans
Josh and Richard go at it today in their first big post in quite a while, this about the Angels' roller-coaster-scary offseason. Richard closes by saying, "I'm not at all convinced that Bill Stoneman has any kind of long-term plan [for] this club - here's hoping he proves me wrong this offseason." It's often times looked that way to me, too; why bother pursuing Konerko? Well, as one anonymous reader pointed out in the comments, the Riverside Press-Enterprise has a dandy of a story up about the Angels' offseason, including --
- "It appears the Angels have dropped out of the Ramirez sweepstakes for the time being, mainly because General Manager Bill Stoneman does not want to part with any of the highly regarded Angels prospects." You mean he's not as dumb as we thought he was when he was about to unload three of the club's highly regarded prospects, and one (Kotchman) who had started to prove his value at the major league level?
"For the value in trade, what would it cost us talent-wise?" Stoneman pondered. "For us to be in a position where we've got guys very close to popping through at the major league level, it's a really good feeling. It gives us a good gauge to what other clubs think of our players. Judging by what other clubs (talk to them about), we're in a good position."
So, in addition to marketing, we can call it window-shopping? I learn something about the GMing business every day, it seems... - If Erstad isn't traded, Kotchman will be the starting first baseman.
"It definitely adds flexibility to move Darin to another position," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "We talked to him about it, and he said he would do whatever is best for the team."
- The Angels weren't interested in trading Orlando Cabrera to the Red Sox. (Please? Opportunities like that one won't come along every day...)
- Jered Weaver, Joe Saunders, Kendry Morales, and Dallas McPherson will all be trying out for positions on the club in spring training.
- Oh, and the Sweeney deal was never for real.
Comments:
Come on, OC has only been here for one year on a 4 year contract. If Stoneman does have a plan, there is no way he would trade him yet. I say that if Wood has another season like last year next year, OC could quickly be gone.
one amusing aspect of the press enterprise article is beat writer matt hursh's exasperation with bill stoneman . . . he clearly thinks stoneman is nuts not to give up some of the team's better prospects
