Nancy Bea Hefley Nearly Retires

I was unaware of this, but Dodgers organist Nancy Bea Hefley handed in her resignation in sorrow at her diminished role (she only plays "Take Me Out To The Ballgams" now, and perhaps three or four other numbers, a total of five minutes a night) — but was talked out of it.
"They said I had a job as long as I want the job, the job would not be open for anybody else," Hefley said. "I will be signing a new contract at the end of the year."
Whew. Bullet dodged.

Brian Stow Opens Eyes, Still In Critical Condition

NBC Sports passes on an AP report that Bryan Stow has opened his eyes and is off one of the five anti-seizure medications he's been placed on. His doctors say it's still a long way from knowing when he will have a diagnosis.

The Dodgers increased the reward for information leading to the arrest of the assailants by $100,000, making the total now $200,000. The LAPD yesterday revealed a woman drove the getaway car of the suspects. Bryan's mother Ann Stow praised the support she received in Los Angeles, saying "This truly is the city of angels" as her son was transferred to a San Francisco hospital.

Dodgers Cancel Half-Price Beer Sales

I hate the blame-the-substance thinking that goes into this, but given the circumstances, it makes a certain amount of sense: the Dodgers are canceling plans to hold half-price alcohol sales at six games this year. Of course, we have no idea whether Bryan Stow's attackers were drunk at the time.

LAPD To Deploy More Cops In Dodger Stadium — Maybe

The Times is reporting that Dodger Stadium will see a large increase in the number of LAPD officers at games. However:
When asked whether the cost of adding additional officers would be passed on to Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, Beck said he expected the Dodgers would foot the bill. Villaraigosa declined to say whether he had a formal commitment from McCourt to pay what could quickly become a six-figure cost, depending on how big the response and how many games it lasts. Discussions with McCourt and his staff to reach an agreement are ongoing, Villaraigosa said.
Oh, wait — actual moneyz will be involved???!!! Oh, noes!!!11!!1!! SRSLY, this isn't actually going to happen, or if it does, the details, when announced, will be vital.

McCourt Confident In Security Despite Thursday Brutality

All is well. Also, Frank is confident he'll keep owning the Dodgers despite Bud Selig turning down his bid to get a loan from Fox.

Dodgers Introduce New Menus For 2010

This looks like a potentially huge win, especially the Kaiser Permanente lettuce wraps. Picante Dogs will also make a return, as will California Pizza Kitchen as the official pizza vendor, and Dippin' Dots ice cream. I'm sure it will all cost a fortune, but I'm really hoping this emphasis on better menus will make the food worth it. Now if only they could do something about those confounded lines ...

Dodger Stadium Shuttle To Run Again This Year

Thanks to a $300,000 clean air grant, the Dodger Stadium shuttle will once again run this year. Now, will they arrange access so that it's not just another crawl out of the parking lot?

Dodgers To Delay Stadium Renovations

A piece in the Los Angeles Business Journal says the Dodgers are about to delay renovations to Dodger Stadium, ostensibly because of the recession.
The team's goal was to begin construction after the 2009 season and complete all three phases by 2012. With the credit markets drying up during the past 18 months, it has been difficult for the Dodgers to obtain financing for refurbishing the 47-year-old facility, team VP/PR & Broadcasting Josh Rawitch told SportsBusiness Daily.
That's kind of a funny thing to say considering the the team just came off the second-highest attendance year in its history. I don't say this as anything like an absolute certainty, but isn't it at least possible that this could be the first casualty of Frank-n-Jamie's crackup?

The Brutal Dodger Kiss-Cam

From FMyLife.com:
Today, I went to a Dodger game with my crush. Between innings, the "Kiss cam" came up on the big screen. The camera happened to land on us, and when my crush saw us on the screen, he leaned away from me and buried his face in his hands. Everyone saw, and sympathetically said "Awww." FML
I've always wondered why people don't kiss on-camera. Sometimes I imagine they're brother and sister.

Dodger Stadium Gets Its Own ZIP Code

90090, changed from 90012.
The official unveiling will take place Saturday, June 6, before the Dodgers' 1:10 p.m. PT game with Philadelphia.

"Not only do more than three million citizens call Dodger Stadium their summer home each year but fans from all over the world send cards and letters to the Dodgers organization and their favorite players," said Gregory G. Graves, the Postal Service's district manager for Los Angeles, in a statement released by the club.

I'll be curious to see what the boundaries of the proposed ZIP code are.

The Los Angeles city council designated Dodger Stadium and its associated property "Dodgertown" last October.

Man Stabbed After Dodgers Home Opener

Sigh.
The stabbing was reported at 5:43 p.m. in parking lot 6 at Dodger Stadium, said Officer Karen Rayner. The victim, who was not immediately identified, was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.

Police are searching for the assailant, who fled with two others in a black pickup truck, Rayner said.

"Officers have a good description of the vehicle and the suspects, and we expect to make arrests," she said.

About the same time, police received a report of a man with a gun in parking lot 4. Rayner said police later determined that the man had been vandalizing cars and was unarmed. He fled before officers arrived.

Dodgers, Trolley Still At Impasse

Via LA StreetsBlog, Eric Richardson reports that the Dodgers apparently have taken no steps to ensure the return of the Dodger Trolley. LA MTA officials haven't been asleep, however, and even plotted out a new route that avoids congestion on Sunset. Frankly, I'm not sure what to make of this, because it does remind me that a trolley would — at least in theory — cut into parking revenues, and the Dodgers are under no obligation to give that up.

Dodgers Trolley May Not Return Next Year

The Dodgers trolley program was apparently such a big success that it immediately created a $150,000 hole in the city transportation budget, one that's expected to balloon in 2009 to $380,000 if the Dodgers don't help with costs (and that's assuming a $3 surcharge per passenger). Reduced service or even discontinuation is a possibility.

Rowdy Dodger Fans Getting Press; Now, Will The McCourts Do Something About It?

A front-page story on today's Times discusses something that's been an increasing concern for me over the last few years, and that is fan violence, especially that aimed at anyone wearing opposition colors:
"It was pretty intense," said Dan Pike, 28, a Las Vegas resident and Phillies fan who was tormented for much of Monday's playoff game at Dodger Stadium by two brew-bleary home-team supporters sitting behind him.

He endured pushing, shoving and obscene taunts, along with a seat soaking by strategically spilled Buds whenever he stood to cheer.

"After about eight beers, they were getting a little physical," said Pike, whose misery ended only when security officers hauled off the pair.

Add to that endless obscene taunting, security that is slow to react or missing in action, and horrible parking, and trips to Dodger Stadium can become a real drag. What concerns me about this piece isn't so much that it's getting written; that's a net positive. Given the McCourts' tendencies to treat everything as a PR problem, it strikes me likely that nothing will be done about it if they think they can make the perception go away without changing the reality.

Tony Pierce On Classless Dodger Fans

It's probably worse in the bleachers — one reason I never go there — but the boorish behavior detailed by Tony Pierce is sadly all too common, an event marring Dodgers games for even Dodger fans (this one, anyway); the "X sucks" chants are not only old, but unimaginative and almost thuggish. Given the three hours I spent in traffic at my last game (one in and two out, though admittedly it was a postseason game), it's no surprise that I go to fewer and fewer of these. My understanding is that the trolley service is no help because the trolleys rely on exit paths blocked by auto traffic as well. That's too bad.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished, Or, How To Keep People From Getting Into Dodger Stadium

Some time ago, the Sons were kind enough to give away ticket vouchers, which I didn't use immediately but elected to cashier on Tuesday's game (my birthday, conveniently enough). However, the instructions on the vouchers demanded I redeem them at Dodger Stadium, Monday through Saturday between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.

I arrived at the stadium at 4:55 — okay, that was my bad, but as I discovered presently, it wouldn't have mattered anyway. After reaching the upper deck ticket office, I discovered that it had already closed, and more, that the ticket office that was open wouldn't sell me tickets to a future game.

So, I got to stand in line, at first with just the people who wanted tickets to a future Dodger game, to the right of the line of people waiting to get in for the night's game. Later, the guy in the day ticket booth — who were actually selling tickets for today's game despite the "SOLD OUT" signs at the parking lot gates — told me that we actually needed to be in the line with all the game day ticket holders.

Okay.

So by this point I'm getting pretty sore: first, the Dodgers have open ticket windows but they can't sell me tickets, and then, they make me wait in not one but two lines, one of those because the people at the window were unclear as to where we needed to be. What I found after I got in line was even more appalling, though; the people in line ahead of me told me they got in to the park at 4:00 pm but were unable to buy tickets at the upper deck advance window because of a power outage. They were told to go downstairs to buy their tickets, but this proved impossible and they were redirected back up to the upper deck. So they waited an hour and forty minutes just to get to the ticket window.

It was more irritating at the time, of course, and the fact that I eventually ended up with a pair of tickets that cost me, basically, $15 parking made it sting that much less. (I was told at the gate I had 20 minutes to get my tickets and get back through the gate, a ludicrously small time as it turned out.) But if Frank McCourt is worried about getting butts in the seats, he really needs to rethink his stadium operations.
