Kind of a mess, but the sidebar archive links are working again. Not currently hosted at my domain (yet), but they'll get transferred eventually.

Milton Mauls Cubs: Dodgers 8, Cubs 2

A game that was really never in doubt after the Dodgers hit five straight singles to open the first (and scored five in that same frame), the Cubs never mounted any serious threat as Sean Marshall failed to go to his curve, Eric Milton got a relatively easy win, and the Dodgers managed a split at Wrigley.

Subtraction By Addition: Angels 9, Mariners 8

So Ervin Santana is back, and all's well with the Angels, right? Uh, not. Santana had nothing and gave up eight runs to prove it. With both Santana and Lackey sucking, and the offense more or less random (they did post six runs though, which should count for something), these moves actually represent a step backwards for the team. Maybe they should have checked to see whether Santana was in fact ready to return, instead of rushing him back.

Bottom 9th: David Aardsma walks a pair and gets Bobby Abreu to fly out to left, but Vlad doinked a "double" down the right field line in no-man's land to make it 8-7 Mariners. With Vlad on second, Scioscia pinch-ran Gary Matthews, Jr., and Aardsma countered by intentionally walking Torii Hunter — and then walked Rivera unintentionally to tie the game at 8-8.

And Kendry singled home Matthews, Jr. for the win. Jebus.

But I'm still cranky about Santana.

In Which Bill Plaschke Gives Me Ever-Warmer Feelings About Frank McCourt

If Plaschke is for it, it's almost certainly wrong. McCourt treating Ramirez with kid gloves? Wow, you almost might think that McCourt knew that Manny was juicing or something. Sorry, I can't get too worked up about that.
Why won't the Dodgers stand up for the real victims here?
... and they would be, who, exactly, Bill?
And why won't somebody, anybody, trumpet the fact that without Ramirez, they have still won 13 of 22 games while increasing their lead in the National League West. Just once, I'd like a team official to say, "You know, we're a pretty good team without him."
Wow, you mean like this May 10 story by Dylan Hernandez, where the players themselves said it?
". . . We still have a good team," James Loney said.

". . . We still have eight good hitters out there," Matt Kemp said.

". . . I think we could do something special even without him," Eric Stults said.

What an ultramaroon Plaschke is.

Good on McCourt for keeping the moralizing off the papers and away from the TV cameras.

Rally, Clunky: Mariners 4, Angels 3 (10 Innings)

The sad thing about this loss is that Matt Palmer's seven scoreless frames will go largely forgotten, though even there, the risk is in overestimating their value; he let himself get sucked into full counts in six of the 25 batters he faced, and had thrown 71 pitches by the end of the fourth. Not that that's intrinsically terrible, but it seems like "gritty" is the operative adjective with every single one of his starts. Nevertheless, considering the absolute garbage the bullpen has been, and how difficult his first two innings have been for him since his callup with the Angels, to hold the opposition scoreless for seven frames is no small feat.

The Angels' rally in the seventh, sparked by Izturis' reaching on an error by Russell Branyan (he failed to grab a fairly routine grounder right at him), got the Halos their first run when Erick Aybar hammered a Felix Hernandez pitch into the right center gap. The Angels got two more in the eighth when Vlad and Torii Hunter singled in succession, and then Brandon Morrow intentionally walked Kendry Morales to load the bases, hopefully setting up the double play. Izturis then knocked in Vlad on a scoring groundout to second, and Gary Matthews, Jr. singled home Torii. The Angels could have had more, but then Matthews made one of his frequent-enough, dumb-as-a-post baserunning blunders, and got caught too far off first when Ichiro threw behind him to nail him at first.

It wasn't the first time the Halos have made stupid baserunning mistakes, but it was a piece with the general idiocy of tonight's game. Brian Fuentes got the first batter he faced, Betancourt, on two pitches. Then, Adrian Beltre fouled a pitch to right that Izturis almost caught, but for the new foul ground seats that got in the way. Beltre singled, and that was the difference in the game, because the next batter, Ken Griffey, Jr., popped out to short, and that would have been the game.

Only, not, and Branyan singled, and Jose Lopez — Jose Lopez! — homered, and the game was tied; Jose Arredondo's ensuing meltdown in the 10th was almost guaranteed, especially after he gave up a leadoff double to late-innings sub Wladimir Balentien.

This is a bad team. The worst part about it, though, is that they're only mediocre, not horrible, and so the 2010 draft won't be especially lucrative for the Angels. I have better things to do with my afternoons, and so I'm giving tomorrow's tickets away to someone else. This is misery. I'm sick of the slap-hitting, singles-driven offense that keeps hitting into double plays (I'm talkin' to you, Bobby Abreu — two in one night, my God). Send Kendrick down, call up Brandon Wood, and quit with the fooling around already.

Update: Mike DiGiovanna speculates that it could be Sean Rodriguez rather than Brandon Wood who gets the call up if Howie Kendrick gets sent down to Salt Lake to find his stroke. I wouldn't object, I know that much. It's way past time to shake things up.

Dempster Turns The Tables On The Dodgers: Cubs 7, Dodgers 0

There's something symmetric about this series so far; the Dodgers won the first game 2-1, and lost the second one 2-1, with James Loney famously picking up a golden sombrero in yesterday's contest. Today, the Dodgers are getting some payback for last year's embarrassing postseason loss, one in which Ryan Dempster walked seven Dodgers; the Cubs have a run on the board for every one of those walks, touching up Eric Stults hard. Stults only lasted three innings, pitching to two batters in the fourth, walking Bobby Scales and then giving up an RBI triple to Mike Fontenot, currently halfway to a cycle. Jeff Weaver was scarcely better, loading the bases, walking in a run, and giving up another on a double play. Dempster had the Dodgers looking mighty confused at the plate, and for the first time all season, the Dodgers have had a really rough game.

Jim Tracy In Midseason Form Already

Heh:
"Am I sitting here saying to you that this is going to be a turnaround overnight?" Tracy said. "Maybe not. But I am going to do what I think has a chance to work."
His postgame interviews with the Dodgers were all like that: asking himself a question and then answering it himself. At least he started off on a good foot by beating the Padres at home, 3-0.

Juan Is The Loneliest Number: Mariners 4, Angels 2

Lackey stank on ice for the second straight game; I'm not sure why Scioscia kept him in as long as he did, but I'm sure the general randomness of the bullpen had a lot to do with it. He's had one quality start since returning from the DL, and a grand total of seven strikeouts. Matt Welch's cogent observation that Lackey's descent to mediocrity or worse since a August 26, 2008 complete game against the A's. One wonders if he hurt himself then, because he's averaged under 6 IP/game, and tonight's awful outing did nothing to dissuade me of that.

Juan Rivera hit a solo homer in the fifth against former Dirtbag (and Jered Weaver's ex-teammate) Jason Vargas. Rivera also made a fine catch to rob Russell Branyan of a homer in the ninth, but he clearly wasn't able to do the rest on his own. The Angels hit into two double plays, one of them a lineout by Bobby Abreu which was just bad luck, and there were some hard-hit outs in the eighth, too, two consecutive liners caught at first. Sometimes you're the bug, and sometimes you're the windshield, but with the Rangers winning both of their double header games against a pitiful Oakland team, the Angels look increasingly like a .500 team that's stuck in neutral.

One problem I'm increasingly having with this squad is the supposition that once all the injured players come back, the team will go right back to the best-record-in-the-AL version from 2008. Steve Bisheff's recent piece asking whether Vlad is on the decline is not a little timely; I think he is, and more, that this is a transition team. Lackey may not be back, and the Angels won't have Nick Adenhart to turn to if — more realistically, when — he goes. A few more outings like this one and Lackey might just end up a Ranger or an Astro next year. Vlad and Abreu walk, Kendrick suddenly turns into a limp puddle of helpless goo at the plate, Figgins goes away, and you're talking about a wholesale turnover of the outfield and large portions of the infield as well. Add to that the already full-blown collapse of the bullpen and a dubious rotation which will see large parts leave after this year (Lackey and Escobar for sure), and suddenly you realize this team could be to the Angels what the 2003 squad was for the Mariners: their last sniff of winning for a very long time.

Update: Attendance 38,000, and the seats far emptier than that on a Friday night. The economy's bad, and the Angels have been less-hard-hit than some other franchises, but this is a mediocre team, and those don't draw well.

Rockies Fire Clint Hurdle, Hire Jim Tracy

Via Jon, the Rockies have fired Clint Hurdle and hired Jim Tracy to replace him. This move was rumored late last year, and followed Tracy's 2007 firing by the Pirates.

Expect to hear homilies about how the 2009 Rockies should be more like the 2004 Dodgers:

Before Tracy had donned a Pirates uniform, in the winter of 2006, he met with center fielder Chris Duffy and told Duffy he should play like Dave Roberts, the Dodgers' leadoff man, even though all Duffy and Roberts had in common was being fast. Among the instructions: Duffy, a line-drive hitter, was told to pound the ball into the ground. He failed miserably, quit baseball for a month and has yet to recover.

Tracy told shortstop Jack Wilson, a three-time runner-up for the Gold Glove, that he did not like his approach to ground balls, that it should be more like Cesar Izturis of the 2004 Dodgers. Wilson had his worst defensive year in 2006 and, at Tracy's behest, Izturis was acquired from the Chicago Cubs this past July. It was at Tracy's urging that Wilson nearly was traded to Detroit in late July, after which Wilson batted .401 in the season's final two months.

One of the things I have learned in my career working in large organizations is that the most effective thing you can do to fix a situation with an incompetent is to give them a glowing recommendation and send them off to a hated enemy. The Dodgers have nothing to fear from the change in management, with the caveat that Tracy's title is "interim manager".

The Not-So-Overworked Dodger Bullpen, Take 2

Only a couple innings behind Florida's pen as the second-least-used bullpen in the NL. What's being missed is that all of those other teams are throwing more innings (the Dodgers have the fewest most innings pitched in the league), and the Dodgers have had 10 of their 15 losses on the road.

Previously: Dodgers Worried About Going The Pen Early?

Update: Oops, the Dodgers have the most innings pitched in the league.

Last Year's Girl: Dodgers 2, Cubs 1

Was Mark DeRosa the key to last year's Cubs team? I sort of doubt it, but the 2009 squad has been dealing with injury at a rate that seems unbelievable, and so he's become kind of a totem to this year's team. Aramis Ramirez isn't the only thing afflicting them, but his absence is a peg on which to hang the hat of 8-game losing streaks and other similar disasters. At least, they managed to scare the Dodgers here, but until Randy Wolf left the mound, Bobby Scales (on a solo homer) was the only Cub to make it past second base. The Cubs' ninth inning rally almost seemed like a courtesy considering how the Dodgers had dominated in the rest of the game, and I didn't even bother listening to the rest of the game once Reed Johnson had grounded out to short. Sure enough, the Dodgers put this one in the can without too much further effort, striking out Scales and Jake Fox.

Dodgers Worried About Going The Pen Early?

Ned Colletti thinks the Dodgers are going to the bullpen too often and early, and thus he's on the lookout for starting pitching that can get him through six or seven innings more consistently. Dodger starters are averaging 5.64 innings per start; how does that stack up to other teams in the NL?
Team IP/GS
===========
 CIN 6.22
 STL 6.07
 PIT 6.07
 SFG 5.98
 CHC 5.98
 ARI 5.95
 ATL 5.94
 MIL 5.86
 NYM 5.85
 SDP 5.77
 COL 5.75
 LAD 5.64
 PHI 5.52
 WSH 5.52
 FLO 5.48
 HOU 5.42
The Dodgers are down near the bottom of the league and in the second half for sure; a burned-out bullpen seems a possibility, especially in the second half. Getting Hiroki Kuroda back (and he's well on his way with a strong rehab start yesterday) will help.

Weaver The Brilliant: Angels 3, White Sox 1

In a season where mediocrity feels like a step up, and injury and death have haunted the team almost from the beginning, Jered Weaver's sudden tranformation into a legitimate staff ace is nothing short of astonishing. The Chisox' lefties, usually Weaver's nemesis prior to this year, went 2-for-10 against him, and both of those hits came off the bat of Jim Thome.

Bobby Abreu hit his first homer of the year in Tuesday's game, and he came through big again yesterday with a huge RBI double in the right place, but the game's big blow was Juan Rivera's two-run double in the same sixth inning, right as Chicago starter Gavin Floyd seemed to be tiring. Every time the Angels face him, he has a ridiculous ERA, it seems to me, but then he pitches well for a while and the Angels tear into him late. This wasn't a rending of flesh, but it was good enough.

Dodgers Sweep Rocks: Dodgers 8, Rockies 6

Coming back from a 3-2 deficit, the Dodger pounded out five runs, including one on a Juan Pierre single; Pierre is still hitting out of his mind, retaining a .404 average this late in the season is pretty crazy. I would love to know when the last time someone has held a batting average over .400 so late was; I'd have to guess it was Chipper Jones' 2008, in which his average didn't fall under .400 for good until June 19.

Jonathan Broxton gave the Dodgers a good scare, coming into a Rockies rally that started with a Ryan Spillborghs single and a Seth Smith triple. Brox added fuel to the fire by walking the bases loaded and walking in a run, but he finally settled down to get Brad Hawpe to bounce out to short.

And the Dodgers continue to have the best record in baseball. Yikes.

Angels Finally Admit To The Obvious, Send Shields To 15-Day DL

The Register reports that Scot Shields has been sent to the 15-day DL with left patella tendinitis (duh), and Rich Thompson got the callup from AAA Salt Lake. Shields finally gave in after a rough outing earlier in the week:
“Scotty’s a tough kid. He’s not a guy that really gives in to little nicks and he doesn’t give in to situations out on the mound,” Scioscia said. “He’s mentally tough and physically tough. For him to really scuffle that bad, we need to take some time off here and get him at a manageable level.”

Shields had two months to rest his knee over the winter and still felt pain starting this spring, so it’s unclear how much time he’ll need to get healthy. The pain reached a crescendo Tuesday night.

“There were some good days, but today I wasn’t even thinking about the hitters. I was just thinking about how much pain is this going to be?” Shields said. “When it came to that point, I was just like, ‘I can’t go on like that.’ “

Strange Days: What It's Like To Face Devaris Gordon

Via David Pinto, an interesting look at the game from one of the Loons' opposing pitchers:
I mentioned before that Great Lakes had the league leader in home runs and stolen bases. Before the game someone asked me which guy I was more worried about facing. For me it is hands down the base stealer. The Loons lead off hitter Dee Gordon (son of former Yankee Tom Gordon) is a burner (24 steals in 38 games) and his swing played directly into his strengths as he was looking to slap something on the ground the other way. Hitters like Gordon for me are harder than power hitters because with a power hitter you can force weak contact with good pitches and you can keep them in the ball park. With speedy slap hitters if you force weak contact they are often more likely to get a hit. Last night in a 0-1 I threw a splitter low and away to Gordon and he weakly chopped it over the mound for a base hit. Frustrating because I executed my pitch forced him into weak contact and now I have to deal with him on the base paths. Two pitches later we pitched out and Gordon stole 2nd base anyways, with the throw being off line. Two pitches after that a bloop into left center led to a run. Speed kills. For me I would rather face A-Rod then Ichiro any day of the week.

Two Games

Slaughter 1: Dodgers 16, Rockies 6

Lazily on during yesterday's barbecue, the Dodgers pummeled the Rockies in the seventh for eight runs; yet, neither side homered whatsoever. Eric Stults, who struggled early, got chased in the fifth, and the Win Fairy bonked Will Ohman instead.

Yahoo boxDodgers recap

Slaughter 2: White Sox 17, Angels 3

The point was supposed to be the Angels getting both Ervin Santana and Vlad Guerrero back on the field at the same time, but this team has a way of dashing high expectations almost every time. Vlad was 0-for-4, Santana didn't make it out of the second (and in fact failed to retire a batter), and the Angels once again showed why the mantra of health isn't quite enough. Santana's been called a two-pitch starter, which is to say he has nothing to fall back on when his stuff isn't there, and yesterday that flaw got exposed as it hasn't in quite a while.

Incidentally, why is it that both the Yahoo and ESPN play-by-play get the second inning of that game wrong? Neither shows Santana exiting the game, nor two of the inning's four outs.
