Dodgers Disable Eric Stults, Call Up Random Third Baseman-Turned-Pitcher Travis Schlichting
Tech: More On FiOS
- The remote has a PIP button that does nothing. A brief discussion with FiOS tech support yields no answers, other than it isn't currently supported.
- The FiOS support tech insists on asking for my phone number after I had already confirmed it with the robo-voice. Irritating. (TW also did this. Why is this so common? Does nobody actually use their own service?)
- The tech support menu pushes you through an unhelpful voice support maze that doesn't allow you to ask questions of a human without going through a series of tasks wholly unrelated to my problem (anyway). However, they do allow you to talk to a human if you sit there and push the 0 button enough times.
- We're having picture dropout issues on our downstairs DVR. This isn't good, but I expect it may be due to heat problems; the Time-Warner DVR we had before in that spot also had this kind of trouble, and we ended up fixing it by shuffling components. It may be necessary to get a fan in our equipment stack, and/or installing shelving so that there's more space between units.
Subtraction By Addition: Angels 9, Mariners 8
Bottom 9th: David Aardsma walks a pair and gets Bobby Abreu to fly out to left, but Vlad doinked a "double" down the right field line in no-man's land to make it 8-7 Mariners. With Vlad on second, Scioscia pinch-ran Gary Matthews, Jr., and Aardsma countered by intentionally walking Torii Hunter — and then walked Rivera unintentionally to tie the game at 8-8.
And Kendry singled home Matthews, Jr. for the win. Jebus.
But I'm still cranky about Santana.

In Which Bill Plaschke Gives Me Ever-Warmer Feelings About Frank McCourt
Why won't the Dodgers stand up for the real victims here?... and they would be, who, exactly, Bill?
And why won't somebody, anybody, trumpet the fact that without Ramirez, they have still won 13 of 22 games while increasing their lead in the National League West. Just once, I'd like a team official to say, "You know, we're a pretty good team without him."Wow, you mean like this May 10 story by Dylan Hernandez, where the players themselves said it?
". . . We still have a good team," James Loney said. What an ultramaroon Plaschke is.". . . We still have eight good hitters out there," Matt Kemp said.
". . . I think we could do something special even without him," Eric Stults said.
Good on McCourt for keeping the moralizing off the papers and away from the TV cameras.

Bullet Points On A Morning Fit For Assassinations
- The Angels' bullpen 6.01 ERA continues to be the worst in the league. It is the worst bullpen in franchise history as measured by ERA, the worst previously being the 1994 arson squad; the five worst were
Year ERA ========== 1994 5.47 1979 4.99 1983 4.19 1992 3.96 1998 3.91
That 1994 bullpen was "anchored", if you can call it that, by one Joe Grahe, a general disaster of a pitcher whose career 1.12 K/BB ratio tells you all you need to know about him. In 1993, he seemed to make a breakthrough and had a 4-1 season with a 2.86 ERA. Grahe got his ERA under 3.00 once in '94 — following an April 10 win over the Brewers — but that was it as far as his prowess was concerned, and he almost immediately thereafter turned into dust. Mark Leiter turned in a fairly typical season for him, with a 4.72 ERA and a 103 ERA+. The only significantly above-average relief pitcher on the staff was Bob Patterson, an offseason free-agent signing who panned out with a 4.07 ERA and a 119 ERA+.As it stands now, the 2009 squad has only two relievers with above-average ERA+ numbers, Darren Oliver (pitching out of his mind with a 235 ERA+) and Rich Thompson (173 ERA+ in only 3.1 IP).
- I hate, hate, hate it when teams do things to screw their pitchers, and the foul ground box seats are a good example of that.
- When does the accountability start? Everybody's wondering when Howie Kendrick will either pick it up or get sent to AAA, but has anybody bothered to ask whether Lackey's hiding an injury? And is Kelvim Escobar going to be the answer to anything at all? And if he is, given how bad the bullpen is, why is he being considered for the rotation? Shouldn't he be in the bullpen, and maybe even anointed closer?
- Brandon Wood, Sean Rodriguez, or Maicer Izturis: discuss:
"[Sean Rodriguez has] really picked it up," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's someone we're paying a lot of attention to. The way he's driving the ball, playing all-around, has been very impressive. [Salt Lake Manager] Bobby Mitchell can't say enough good things about how well he's playing."
You mean, guys who have plate discipline and know how to take a damn walk can get pitches to hit? You think? - Imagining the 2010 Angels outfield is a positively depressing exercise, isn't it? Torii Hunter, Reggie Willits, and Terry Evans. What's gonna be available on the free agency market isn't that inspiring, either.
Update: Yes, I should have included Juan Rivera here. But even then, yuck.

Rally, Clunky: Mariners 4, Angels 3 (10 Innings)
The Angels' rally in the seventh, sparked by Izturis' reaching on an error by Russell Branyan (he failed to grab a fairly routine grounder right at him), got the Halos their first run when Erick Aybar hammered a Felix Hernandez pitch into the right center gap. The Angels got two more in the eighth when Vlad and Torii Hunter singled in succession, and then Brandon Morrow intentionally walked Kendry Morales to load the bases, hopefully setting up the double play. Izturis then knocked in Vlad on a scoring groundout to second, and Gary Matthews, Jr. singled home Torii. The Angels could have had more, but then Matthews made one of his frequent-enough, dumb-as-a-post baserunning blunders, and got caught too far off first when Ichiro threw behind him to nail him at first.
It wasn't the first time the Halos have made stupid baserunning mistakes, but it was a piece with the general idiocy of tonight's game. Brian Fuentes got the first batter he faced, Betancourt, on two pitches. Then, Adrian Beltre fouled a pitch to right that Izturis almost caught, but for the new foul ground seats that got in the way. Beltre singled, and that was the difference in the game, because the next batter, Ken Griffey, Jr., popped out to short, and that would have been the game.
Only, not, and Branyan singled, and Jose Lopez — Jose Lopez! — homered, and the game was tied; Jose Arredondo's ensuing meltdown in the 10th was almost guaranteed, especially after he gave up a leadoff double to late-innings sub Wladimir Balentien.
This is a bad team. The worst part about it, though, is that they're only mediocre, not horrible, and so the 2010 draft won't be especially lucrative for the Angels. I have better things to do with my afternoons, and so I'm giving tomorrow's tickets away to someone else. This is misery. I'm sick of the slap-hitting, singles-driven offense that keeps hitting into double plays (I'm talkin' to you, Bobby Abreu — two in one night, my God). Send Kendrick down, call up Brandon Wood, and quit with the fooling around already.
Update: Mike DiGiovanna speculates that it could be Sean Rodriguez rather than Brandon Wood who gets the call up if Howie Kendrick gets sent down to Salt Lake to find his stroke. I wouldn't object, I know that much. It's way past time to shake things up.

Jim Tracy In Midseason Form Already
"Am I sitting here saying to you that this is going to be a turnaround overnight?" Tracy said. "Maybe not. But I am going to do what I think has a chance to work."His postgame interviews with the Dodgers were all like that: asking himself a question and then answering it himself. At least he started off on a good foot by beating the Padres at home, 3-0.

Juan Is The Loneliest Number: Mariners 4, Angels 2
Juan Rivera hit a solo homer in the fifth against former Dirtbag (and Jered Weaver's ex-teammate) Jason Vargas. Rivera also made a fine catch to rob Russell Branyan of a homer in the ninth, but he clearly wasn't able to do the rest on his own. The Angels hit into two double plays, one of them a lineout by Bobby Abreu which was just bad luck, and there were some hard-hit outs in the eighth, too, two consecutive liners caught at first. Sometimes you're the bug, and sometimes you're the windshield, but with the Rangers winning both of their double header games against a pitiful Oakland team, the Angels look increasingly like a .500 team that's stuck in neutral.
One problem I'm increasingly having with this squad is the supposition that once all the injured players come back, the team will go right back to the best-record-in-the-AL version from 2008. Steve Bisheff's recent piece asking whether Vlad is on the decline is not a little timely; I think he is, and more, that this is a transition team. Lackey may not be back, and the Angels won't have Nick Adenhart to turn to if — more realistically, when — he goes. A few more outings like this one and Lackey might just end up a Ranger or an Astro next year. Vlad and Abreu walk, Kendrick suddenly turns into a limp puddle of helpless goo at the plate, Figgins goes away, and you're talking about a wholesale turnover of the outfield and large portions of the infield as well. Add to that the already full-blown collapse of the bullpen and a dubious rotation which will see large parts leave after this year (Lackey and Escobar for sure), and suddenly you realize this team could be to the Angels what the 2003 squad was for the Mariners: their last sniff of winning for a very long time.
Update: Attendance 38,000, and the seats far emptier than that on a Friday night. The economy's bad, and the Angels have been less-hard-hit than some other franchises, but this is a mediocre team, and those don't draw well.

Rockies Fire Clint Hurdle, Hire Jim Tracy
Expect to hear homilies about how the 2009 Rockies should be more like the 2004 Dodgers:
Before Tracy had donned a Pirates uniform, in the winter of 2006, he met with center fielder Chris Duffy and told Duffy he should play like Dave Roberts, the Dodgers' leadoff man, even though all Duffy and Roberts had in common was being fast. Among the instructions: Duffy, a line-drive hitter, was told to pound the ball into the ground. He failed miserably, quit baseball for a month and has yet to recover. One of the things I have learned in my career working in large organizations is that the most effective thing you can do to fix a situation with an incompetent is to give them a glowing recommendation and send them off to a hated enemy. The Dodgers have nothing to fear from the change in management, with the caveat that Tracy's title is "interim manager".Tracy told shortstop Jack Wilson, a three-time runner-up for the Gold Glove, that he did not like his approach to ground balls, that it should be more like Cesar Izturis of the 2004 Dodgers. Wilson had his worst defensive year in 2006 and, at Tracy's behest, Izturis was acquired from the Chicago Cubs this past July. It was at Tracy's urging that Wilson nearly was traded to Detroit in late July, after which Wilson batted .401 in the season's final two months.

Weaver The Brilliant: Angels 3, White Sox 1
Bobby Abreu hit his first homer of the year in Tuesday's game, and he came through big again yesterday with a huge RBI double in the right place, but the game's big blow was Juan Rivera's two-run double in the same sixth inning, right as Chicago starter Gavin Floyd seemed to be tiring. Every time the Angels face him, he has a ridiculous ERA, it seems to me, but then he pitches well for a while and the Angels tear into him late. This wasn't a rending of flesh, but it was good enough.

Dodgers Sweep Rocks: Dodgers 8, Rockies 6
Jonathan Broxton gave the Dodgers a good scare, coming into a Rockies rally that started with a Ryan Spillborghs single and a Seth Smith triple. Brox added fuel to the fire by walking the bases loaded and walking in a run, but he finally settled down to get Brad Hawpe to bounce out to short.
And the Dodgers continue to have the best record in baseball. Yikes.

Angels Finally Admit To The Obvious, Send Shields To 15-Day DL
“Scotty’s a tough kid. He’s not a guy that really gives in to little nicks and he doesn’t give in to situations out on the mound,” Scioscia said. “He’s mentally tough and physically tough. For him to really scuffle that bad, we need to take some time off here and get him at a manageable level.”Via HH.Shields had two months to rest his knee over the winter and still felt pain starting this spring, so it’s unclear how much time he’ll need to get healthy. The pain reached a crescendo Tuesday night.
“There were some good days, but today I wasn’t even thinking about the hitters. I was just thinking about how much pain is this going to be?” Shields said. “When it came to that point, I was just like, ‘I can’t go on like that.’ “
Update: Ash is excited.

Strange Days: What It's Like To Face Devaris Gordon
I mentioned before that Great Lakes had the league leader in home runs and stolen bases. Before the game someone asked me which guy I was more worried about facing. For me it is hands down the base stealer. The Loons lead off hitter Dee Gordon (son of former Yankee Tom Gordon) is a burner (24 steals in 38 games) and his swing played directly into his strengths as he was looking to slap something on the ground the other way. Hitters like Gordon for me are harder than power hitters because with a power hitter you can force weak contact with good pitches and you can keep them in the ball park. With speedy slap hitters if you force weak contact they are often more likely to get a hit. Last night in a 0-1 I threw a splitter low and away to Gordon and he weakly chopped it over the mound for a base hit. Frustrating because I executed my pitch forced him into weak contact and now I have to deal with him on the base paths. Two pitches later we pitched out and Gordon stole 2nd base anyways, with the throw being off line. Two pitches after that a bloop into left center led to a run. Speed kills. For me I would rather face A-Rod then Ichiro any day of the week.

Two Games
Slaughter 1: Dodgers 16, Rockies 6
Lazily on during yesterday's barbecue, the Dodgers pummeled the Rockies in the seventh for eight runs; yet, neither side homered whatsoever. Eric Stults, who struggled early, got chased in the fifth, and the Win Fairy bonked Will Ohman instead.Slaughter 2: White Sox 17, Angels 3
The point was supposed to be the Angels getting both Ervin Santana and Vlad Guerrero back on the field at the same time, but this team has a way of dashing high expectations almost every time. Vlad was 0-for-4, Santana didn't make it out of the second (and in fact failed to retire a batter), and the Angels once again showed why the mantra of health isn't quite enough. Santana's been called a two-pitch starter, which is to say he has nothing to fall back on when his stuff isn't there, and yesterday that flaw got exposed as it hasn't in quite a while.Incidentally, why is it that both the Yahoo and ESPN play-by-play get the second inning of that game wrong? Neither shows Santana exiting the game, nor two of the inning's four outs.
